4. Note • Often, adverbs can be recognized by the suffix –ly. Remember, however, that not all adverbs end in –lyand not all words that end in –lyare adverbs. • Adverbs: swam quickly left later • Adjectives: only friend early flight

5. Position of Adverbs • Adverbs may come before, after, or between the words they modify. • Quietly, she will tiptoe from the stage. • She will quietly tiptoe from the stage. • She will tiptoe quietly from the stage.

6. Identify the Adverbs: • Hawks fly very quickly across the sky. • They have slightly rounded wings. • Their light-colored eyes give them a rather fierce look. • Hawks are often seen in many parts of the world. • When disturbed, they utter extremely piercing whistles. • Hawks have amazingly sharp eyesight. • The female hawks quite often are larger than the male hawks. • Hawks are extremely private birds. • They prefer living in quite secluded nests. • Their rather extensive diet includes most small mammals and birds.

7. Adjective or Adverb? • Her curly hair is due to the humidity. • Two deer live in that forest. • He reacted so strangely to the news. • This telephone is extremely old. • The grey cat belongs to her. • A Japanese bonsai tree is pretty. • His voice suddenly sounded squeaky. • The carpet is being replaced by marble tile. • Several leasing agents helped everyone. • Yesterday, they went to dinner.
