Research GOAL:Improve the research support services and infrastructure to increase levels of funded and unfunded high quality research by: • Developing and implementing criteria, systems and procedures for "investing" in best research support services, physical space and equipment February 3, 2003

  5. Research (cont’d.) Goals (cont’d.) • Developing and implementing a financial plan for providing adequate start-up, cost-sharing, and operating funds to support research • Increasing the level and quality of pre-award and post-award administrative support services February 3, 2003

ACCOMPLISHMENTS: • Created the Ad Hoc Committee on Research Support and Infrastructure to recommend research infrastructure improvements • Created a Presidential Research Advancement Committee (PCRA) to set, oversee, and monitor implementation and development of a strategic planning process for increasing competitively awarded, federally-funded research February 3, 2003

ACCOMPLISHMENTS (cont’d.): • Surveyed faculty to identify barriers to cross-campus collaboration in research and began to address areas of concern • Awarded $1.65 M in Wall Funds to support development of projects in areas of existing strength, to increase competitively awarded research funding, and to build research infrastructure: February 3, 2003

ACCOMPLISHMENTS (cont’d.): Wall Fund Awards: • Creation of a Start-Up and Cost Sharing Fund: $600,000 • Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers: $500,000 endowment • Tulane Structural Proteomics Initiative: $200,000 • Neuroscience Center: $150,000 • Center for Computational Science: $150,000 • Renal and Hypertension Center of Excellence: $50,000 February 3, 2003

ACCOMPLISHMENTS (cont’d.): • Developed new university cost-sharing policy • Reorganized Office of Research Administration to facilitate multi-campus proposal submissions and award administration, and strengthen expertise • Streamlined routing, signature, and review processes • Created a web-based Oracle database of proposals and awards, accessible to all faculty February 3, 2003

  10. Research (cont’d.) ACCOMPLISHMENTS (cont’d.): • Joined federal demonstration partnership to reduce research administration burdens • Financial accounting and grant writing workshops, cost sharing training sessions, NCURA training broadcasts offered February 3, 2003

Concentrations of Interest and Expertise GOAL:Identify faculty leadership groups for each of the areas of concentration of interest and expertise (i.e. those areas identified during the planning process: environmental, health science/biomedical, international/area studies, urban/community) to inventory current activities in each area. Identify next steps to expand and find funding opportunities for each area February 3, 2003

GOAL: Develop an ongoing process to identify other possible university-wide themes that cut across multiple schools and colleges; build on existing or potential expertise, interest, and strength; and have the potential to further differentiate Tulane February 3, 2003

ACCOMPLISHMENTS: • Held 3 Presidential Symposia in the areas of Infectious Diseases (Fall 01), Neurosciences (Spring 02), Urban Studies (Fall 02) • Invited prominent scholars to review areas of strengths; resulted in the formation of national advisory committees • Formed an ad hoc Bioterrorism Task Force to offer guidance to the university and community in the wake of September 11 terrorist attacks February 3, 2003

ACCOMPLISHMENTS (cont’d.): • Strengthened existing & encouraged new strategic partnerships and alliances to promote education and research, technology transfer and economic development in Louisiana and the region: • Louisiana Gene Therapy Research Consortium • Tulane Cancer Center • Neuroscience research February 3, 2003
