  3. Fiscal Safety • Bank of America-Temple City • Financial abuse is the theft or embezzlement of money or any other property from an elder. It an be as simple as taking money from a wallet (family, friends, strangers), unusual bank activity, unpaid bills when someone is designated to do so, and as complex as manipulating a victim into turning over property to an abuser/predator.

  6. What is Elder Abuse? • Physical Abuse • Physical Assault • Sexual Assault • Unreasonable physical constraint • Prolonged Deprivation of food or water • Inappropriate use of physical or chemical restraints

  7. Emotional Abuse • Verbal Assaults, threats or intimidation • Subjecting an individual to fear, isolation or serious emotional distress • Withholding of emotional support • Confinement and forced isolation • Hesitant to talk freely

  8. Neglect Includes • Failure to • assist in personal hygiene • provide clothing & shelter • provide medical care & Meds • protect from health & safety hazards • prevent malnutrition/dehydration • Self neglect

REPORTING • Mandated reporters (Clergy, Healthcare Providers, Custodian of Senior) • Any person who suspects that abuse has occurred…error on the side of caution and report. • Intervention can often save the assets, health, dignity or even life of an elder. • The reporting person is protected from both criminal and civil liability. • REPORT TO • County Adult Protective Services 877 477-3646 • Local Law Enforcement • Long Term Care Omsbudsman 800 231-4024 • Bureau of Medi-Cal/Medicare Fraud 800 722-0432 • Check the Shamrock Website for Resources • In an emergency, always call 911

FRAUDS & SCAMS • RISKS • Telemarketing & Other Phone Calls • Get on a “do not call list” • Don’t give your credit card number or other significant personal ID info on the phone unless you initiated call • Don’t pay for any prize, or guarantee to win prize over the phone or through mail • Sweepstake Checks • Grandparent Scam Requests • Identity Theft-500,000 new victims each year • Stealing purse/wallet • Taking items from mailbox • Bills and receipts in the trash • ATM’s • Buying SSN on the street

Home Loans & Improvements • Target Seniors after an event in a community • Door to door sales • Equity Loans/ Reverse Mortgages • Do’s and Don’ts • Don’t rush • Do get support to read contract terms (down payments, interest, balloon payments) • Don’t EVER accept work from unknown/unlicensed contractor (verify license) • Do get referrals
