  1. Phonics Workshop 27th November 2013

  2. In school, Nursery and Reception are following the Letters and Sounds programme. Letters and Sounds consists of six phases, covered from Nursery to Year 2. Year 1 and Year 2 will be following Letters and Sounds from January.

  3. Letter names and Letter sounds/Phonemes • When teaching phonics we always refer to the letter name and the sound or phoneme. d M s T

  4. Phase 1: Nursery • There are 7 aspects with 3 strands. • A1 – Environmental • A2 – Instrumental sounds • A3 – Body Percussion • A4 – Rhythm and rhyme • A5 – Alliteration • A6 – Voice sounds • A7 – Oral blending and segmenting.

  5. Phase 2: Reception • Set 1: s, a, t, p • Set 2: i, n, m, d • Set 3: g, o, c, k • Set 4: ck, e, u, r • Set 5: h, b, f, ff, l, ll, ss

  6. Phase 3: End of reception/Beginning of year 1 • Set 6: j, v, w, x • Set 7: y, z, zz, qu • Consonant digraphs: ch, sh, th, ng • Vowel digraphs: ai, ee, igh, oa, oo, ar, or, ur, ow, oi, ear, air, ure, er

  7. Phase 4: Year 1/2 • This phase consolidates all the children have learnt in the previous phases.

  8. Phase 5: Year 1/2 • Children will be taught new graphemes and alternative pronunciations for these graphemes. • Vowel digraphs:, ay, ou, ie, ea, oy, ir, ue, aw, ew, oe, au • Split digraphs: • a_e- cake u_e - huge • i_e– kite o_e- hope

  9. Phase 6: Year 2 • The focus is on learning spelling rules for suffixes. -s -es -ing -ed -er -est -y -en -ful -ly -ment -ness

  10. Segmenting • Breaking down words for spelling. cat c a t

  12. In context Using sounds when writing. The queen has been to see the bee. The fat cat sat on the rat’s hat.

  13. Blending Building words from phonemes to read. c a t cat

  14. You try… sheep sheep

  15. In context Using the sounds when reading. The sheep has been sleeping. The cat sat on the fat mat by the bat.

  16. Tricky words Cannot be sound out. said like was the come saw were Look and Say Words
