  2. Background Info • After the Quin Dynasty ended, civil war broke out • Rival Kings were eager to gain control of regions they once owned • Peasants rebelled because of their living conditions • Two Leaders emerged and Liu Bang defeated Xiang Yu

  3. Han Dynasty • Liu Bang declared himself first emperor of the Han Dynasty in 202 BC • First goal was to destroy the rival king’s power

  4. Centralized Government • Central authority controls the running of a state • Hundreds of local officials of provinces reported to the central government • Liu Bang lowered taxes and softened harsh punishments

  5. Mandate of Heaven • This was a sneaky way for new emperors to gain control of China • Meant to legitimize the rule of leaders in China • This was what the Zhou leaders of China used to justify their conquest of Shang rulers

  7. Civil Service Examination • To receive a government position, civilians had to take the civil service exam • This created an intelligent, capable governing class of China

  10. Silk Road • Because of the worldwide demand for silk, trade expanded to Asia, India, and to Rome • The Silk Road spread Buddhism to China

  11. Problems • Experienced conflict with nomads just like Rome did • At first, tried to bribe the nomads with riches. Han Dynasty soon realized they were still being attacked after giving out bribes • Had to build roads and defense walls to maintain order • The cost of defending the imperial frontier led to economic and political crises • Han Dynasty fell by 220 AD
