  3. What is Thin Client? The term "Thin Client" originated with a new generation of client devices (NCs, Windows Terminals, etc.) that run "thin" operating systems locally as opposed to the traditional "fat" PC operating systems (Win95, NT, etc.). Sometimes, they are also recognized as Windows-Based Terminal since majority of them have embedded Windows OS, such as Windows CE or even a stripped down version of Windows NT. Thin client is a type of personal computers for businesses that are designed to be centrally-managed, configured with only essential equipment, and devoid of CD-ROM drive, floppy disk drive, hard drive, and expansion slots (and therefore lower in cost).Most thin clients are powered by back-end centralized servers that are capable of serving all types of clients, fat and thin. In recognition of this fact, the new term "Server-Based Computing" is being used morefrequently.

  4. How does it work? The thin client is, like old "dumb" character terminals, a device that displays centrally stored sever-based applications and data across any network, and onto a user's desktop monitor.  The terminal drives the screen and supports the keyboard, mouse and other input and output devices, such as printers and modems.

  5. Why Thin Client? You get higher productivity, simplified desktop management and lowered costs. One of the most important benefits cited by users of thin clients is the lower total cost of ownership. A typical study by Zona Research shows that cost savings associated with thin clients approach 57% over a five-year period. In addition, by increasing the ratio of centrally managed resources, many companies have achieved more efficient use of available bandwidth, and better performance in database and transaction processing.

They don't store data or software locally, so all your applications and data are safely and securely stored in a central location. They are virus proof. Since they don't break down, and since they have embedded local operating system, they let you drastically reduce your desktop maintenance and help desk support costs. Because they're so simple, they set up in minutes, - really - and you don't need to send a technician to do the install.
