Welcome to Curriculum Night2014-15 *Please take a copy of each handout on the table. *If you would like to volunteer in our classroom please sign-up on the volunteer schedule. *Have a seat at your student’s desk and read their note and goals. *Please register on line for the Newcastle PTSA. This will put your name in the student directory and if 90% of our classroom sign’s up, we receive $50 in classroom books! Feel free to use a laptop.

  2. Welcome Parents! So, what are we going to do with these 5th graders?

  3. First, a couple of things about Mrs. Lundberg… B.S. from Oregon State-Go Beavs! Masters in Elementary Education from U Of Phoenix Experience includes: K-6 Instruction, Special Ed., Resource Room, Instructional Assistant, Girl Scout Leader, and numerous volunteer positions. I am married and my husband, Scott, and I have a 21 year old daughter and 3 cats. I enjoy golfing, running, reading, and watching the Seahawks!

  4. My Goals and Beliefs A classroom that is built on trust, caring, and support. Recognize positive behaviors-deenphasisize negative behaviors. Recognize and support each student’s unique learning style-differentiate. Foster a classroom environment that strives for perseverance, doing your best work, and enjoyment of learning.

  7. Reading What works? *Having an excellent library of both fiction and nonfiction, magazines, books on tape, etc. *Giving students choices in what they read (genres) *Giving time to read *Read Aloud time from teacher *Teaching strategies for comprehension *F & P reading assessment

  9. Read Around the World Fun way to get kids to independently read Visit countries around the world Students and parents fill out together and student submits

  10. Word Study Vocabulary: Students are taught how to learn words and how to remember words. Strategies for learning vocabulary include: context clues, root words, prefixes and suffixes. Spelling: Spelling will be integrated with writing instruction, with an emphasis on application in student’s daily writing.

  14. Everyday Math Student Journals (stay at school) Student Resource Book: can be found on line and is a great tool to use in supporting math at home Homework: We will correct in class each day. This will be a time when your child can see me and other students model the solutions to problems.

Health: FLASH 5th graders do a unit on FLASH in the Spring Teachers trained on the curriculum All students must attend the FLASH health unit and learn about Sexual Health and HIV/AIDS by law, unless a parent attends a district viewing of the curriculum and signs a waiver. The FLASH curriculum covers reproductive organs, puberty for boys and girls, and HIV/AIDS. Anchored in science, health , and anatomy

  19. 5th Grade Service and Volunteerism 5th Grade Mission Statement: 5th graders are leaders by embodying the CARES philosophy. 5th graders will also internalize skills and strategies into habits as lifelong learners. Yearlong focus Launched with Kickin It with the Kinders Goal: become independent, leaders, and seek opportunities to help others Hours will be celebrated & tracked in the classroom Form to track/reflect on experiences Different levels of service based on hours served recognized at Promotion Partnering with PTSA Continuing to model and plan service learning projects at Newcastle Elementary Volunteer opportunities in the community will be shared

  20. Homework Planners: done each day. This is the student’s responsibility. Help your child make it a habit to check off each item in the planner. 50 minutes/day, approximately: 20 min. reading and 30 min. of math and word study. Homework will be assigned at school Monday-Thursday. Work should be neat and completed. Student’s earn an extra $10/week for turning in each day all homework A graded work packet will come home every Friday for you to sign.

  28. Volunteering in our ClassroomWe’d love to have you! • Volunteer sign-up on the back table • Washington State Patrol clearance must be updated yearly. • Opportunities: • Working one on one or with small groups of students during reading or math. • Copying, assembling, bulletin boards, etc.

  29. Middle School Class Choices-a great deal of information will come out in the spring regarding classes for middle school. All classes are self selected, but the district provides recommendations using different scores. I am happy to talk with you in the spring about this. Advocacy-getting students to ask for help. Presentations-teaching and practicing effective public speaking strategies. Organization-we are working hard on this. Grading System-percentage/letter based practice
