Language Arts • Write From the Beginning…and Beyond • Writing Process • Personal Narrative • Imaginative Stories • Poetry • Expository Writing • Persuasive Essays • Letters • Grammar (Parts of Speech) • Word Work (context clues, spelling patterns, synonyms/antonyms, etc.) • Using Conventions (capitalization, punctuation, spelling etc.)

Language ARts • Kidblog • Done in the classroom (comes from their Reading Response Journals) • Spelling • Words Their Way (Brochure on Mrs. Krommenhoek’s website) • No longer about memorizing a list of words • Word sorts- learn the rules and patterns and compare and contrast features in words • Assessment: • Fridays – Mini-Lesson/practice sorting • Monday-Thursday – assessed

Social Studies • American History: • “Adventures in the New World”- Exploring North America/Colonial Life • “Gaining Independence”- American Revolution • “We the People”- New Government • “Expansion and Transformation”- Westward Expansion/Industrial Revolution • “A Nation Divided”- Civil War • “Modern America in a Changing World”- Global Issues • Projects/Researching/Presentations

Homework • Reading at Home for Fun • 100 minutes a week (may increase throughout the year) • Students document independent reading in planner- Parent Signature Required • I will check reading log in the planner on Mondays • Article of the Week • Posted by Monday – Assignment due Friday • Monthly Book Report and Book Talk • Students are expected to read MORE than one book a month, but they are creating a book report on only ONE booka month • Reading Incentive Program

  10. MATH Homework • Weekly Google Forms • Target Math • Ten Marks • Gizmos • Reflex Math • Approximately 1.5 hours of math homework per week • Most of the homework will be assigned online and can be found on my webpage.

  11. Specials • Art – Part of students’ grade is bringing their sketchbook to Art Class • PE – Please check with your child to find out what days they have PE; they need to wear proper shoe attire (ie. Tennis shoes)

  12. After School Pickup • The school day ends at 3:05. • No change of pick up method after 2:45. • All changes must go through the front office.

  13. Tardies • Students are counted as tardy at 7:50 • After the 4th tardy, an office referral will occur

  14. Snacks • Water only to drink (please send in a water bottle with a lid) • Snack needs to be something healthy (no chips or cookies) • Finger food (no utensils)

  15. Birthdays • Celebrated after Specials at the end of the day; send with child in morning or drop off in the office • Please send something easy to pass out and easy to eat/clean up • Include napkins • Must be store-bought, nothing homemade • Mini cupcakes or cookies are perfect!

  16. Grading • Fifth grade students receive numerical grades. You may check the portal to monitor your child’s progress in each curriculum area. Progress reports will go home at midterm, followed by report cards at the end of each nine week grading period. Please sign and return in the envelope.

  17. planners • Students are expected to use their planner daily to note classroom activities and homework. In preparation for middle school, we are shifting the responsibility to the students to use the planner appropriately.

  18. Mustang folder • To promote communication and parental involvement, Mustang Folders will be used. One side is labeled “Take Home” and the other “Sign and Return.” The Take Home side is used for flyers, graded work, and forms or papers requiring your attention. The Sign and Return side will have papers that should return to school the next day. This is the side where unfinished work or homework will be located.

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS • We will value one another as unique and special individuals. • We will not laugh at or make fun of a person’s mistakes nor use sarcasm or putdowns. • We will use good manners, saying “please,” “thank you,” and “excuse me” and allow others to go first. • We will cheer each other to success. • We will help one another whenever possible. • We will recognize every effort and applaud it. • We will encourage each other to do our best. • We will practice virtuous living, using the Life Principles.

B.Y.O.D. • Bring Your Own Device • Can include tablets, e-readers, laptops, smartphones • WHY? • Personalizes learning • Provides more opportunities for real-time learning • Increases student engagement • Learners take ownership-their device, their learning • Please return the B.Y.O.D. permission slip as soon as possible!
