  2. Meet Mrs. Miers • Graduated from Auburn University with a B.S. in Elementary Education • Graduated from Lipscomb University with a Maters in Teaching, Learning, and Leading • 8th year of teaching • Originally from South Carolina • Family

  3. Daily Schedule • 7:50-8:30: Morning Routine and Morning Work • 8:30-9:15: Specials (7 day rotation) • 9:15-9:30: Check Morning Work • 9:30-11:10: Reading and Grammar • 11:10-11:55: Writing • 11:58-12:28: Lunch • 12:35-12:55: Recess • 12:55-1:45: Science • 1:45-3:00: Math • 3:00: Pack Up and Dismissal

  4. Communication • Weekly Newsletters • -Emailed on Monday • -Website • -Friday Flash Email • Agendas (especially for math) • Friday Folders • -Graded Papers (sign cover sheet and return) • -HABIT yellow sheet (sign and return) • Email, Call, Schedule a time to meet

  7. homework • Third grade students receive about 30 minutes of homework each night. Homework will reflect what we are working on in class. It is a way for parents to assist students in progressing skills. • Spelling Homework • -4 activities due on Friday (may complete at own pace) • -Must complete first page (2 times each) and practice test • -Choice of 2 other activities on tic-tac-toe board • -Mock Schedule: • -Monday (2 times each) • -Tuesday/Wednesday (your choice) • -Thursday (practice test) • Math Homework • -Dependent on your child’s math teacher • -Focus on the standard third grade is working on • Reading Log (in addition to spelling/math/other hw) • -20 minutes of reading 5 nights per week • -May double up if needed • -Choose 2 readers response questions to answer weekly • -Due at the end of the month

  8. Transportation • Changes must be made in writing or by email • Please CC Sandy Kelentic on an email • Changes must be made by 2:30 • Early Check outs: • If you know in advance, a note or email is very helpful as we can have your child packed up early • Math: Allows us to let math teacher know

Standards Based Grading • 1: Limited achievement toward standard mastery • (limited knowledge) • 2: Moderate achievement toward standard mastery (some of the time) • 3: Consistent achievement toward standard mastery (most of the time) • 4. Complete standard mastery that includes extension and detailed explanation of the standard. • For writing, your child will progress throughout the year. Remember that writing standards do not change throughout the year.

  10. Georgia’s State Standards • This is the 11th year of the promotion/retention plan for all 3rd graders in Georgia. All students must pass the reading section of the CRCT standardized test in order to promoted to 4th grade. • We need all parents to spend time reading with their children, and having them read to you each night.

  11. SUPPORT • Working with small groups • Correcting work together • Cooperative Learning • Review during morning work • Additional support beyond the classroom

  12. County Testing • Benchmark testing will be September 10 & 11 and then again February. • These tests are used to guide instructional time here at school. The scores will not be sent home.

  13. Standardized Tests • CRCT: April • A state standardized test that assesses your child’s mastery of Georgia’s 3rd grade curriculum • Schools are graded based on these scores • Students must pass the reading section in order to be promoted to 4th grade • Writing: March • Student writing samples are assessed in order to determine their writing stage • Not graded by the state

BYOTBring Your Own Technology • In order for your child to participate in BYOT, he or she must have a signed permission slip on file. • This does not require your child to bring in a device but allows them to use available devices. • When doing an in-class project, laptops and computers will be available for those who do not have devices or apps that are device specific.

  15. Field Trips • The following field trips are scheduled for this year: • High Touch High Tech Magnets • High Touch High Tech Energy • Sawnee Nature Center (out of school) • Money, permission slip, and waiver due Sept. 9th. • *When writing a check, please include a telephone number.

  16. Birthdays • Monthly birthdays will be celebrated at the end of each month during our lunch. • Birthday treats must be store bought with the ingredients listed on the package. • Suggestions for birthday treats may include: purchasing ice cream for the class, pencils, muffins, cookies, etc. Please precut any cake sent in to help save time. • Please don’t pass out individual invitations at school unless there is one for everyone.
