  1. Welcome to Curriculum Night! Ms. Bridgers 5th Grade 8/27/13

  2. All About Me • I earned a degree in Early Childhood Education from the University of Georgia. I obtained my ESOL endorsement while studying at UGA. • I am certified to teach Pre-K through Fifth Grade as well as Middle Grades Math and Science.

  3. Curriculum Information • AKS (Academic Knowledge and Skills)- The AKS is the essential curriculum in Gwinnett County schools. The AKS are aligned to the state-adopted Common Core Georgia Performance Standards in Language Arts and Math for elementary students. • It spells out precisely what students are expected to learn and be able to do in each grade/subject. (AKS Pamphlets) • Progress Reports are sent home every 9 weeks. • Grades can be checked in the Parent Portal. Grading Scales: A= 90 and above B= 80-89 C= 74-79 D= 70-73 U= 69 and under Special areas, effort, health, & conduct E = Excellent (95%) N = Needs to Improve (70%) S = Satisfactory (85%) U = Unsatisfactory(60%) Special Scores: ABS = Absent EXC= Excused (exempt) IP= In Progress (exempt) NTI = Not Turned In

  5. Assessments and Promotional Requirements • To earn promotion to 6th grade, Gwinnett 5th graders must earn a passing score on the Reading and Math subtests of the Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests (CRCT) in April. • The 5th Grade Writing Assessment is also a promotional requirement, and will be administered on March 5th . This evaluates the student’s response to an assigned topic from one of three types of writing— narrative, informational, or persuasive. • Students must also show proficiency of the 5th grade AKS to be promoted to 6th grade. • Students will take the COGAT (Cognitive Abilities Test) the week of September 16th, and the ITBS (Iowa Test of Basic Skills) the week of October 21st.

What We Will Be Learning • Reading- Making Inferences, Using Context Clues, Figurative Language, Main Ideas and Supporting Details, Compare and Contrast, Sequence of Events, Cause and Effect, Problem and Solution, and Summarizing • Writing-Narrative, Informational, Persuasive/Opinion, Poetry, Imaginative, and Response to Literature • Math- Order of Operations, Expressions, Multiplying, Dividing, Decimals, Fractions, Geometry, Coordinate Planes, Volume and Measurement

What We Will Be Learning • Social Studies- Civil War, Reconstruction, World War I, The Great Depression, World War II, The Cold War, and America since 1975 • Science- Classification of Organisms, Cells, Learned Behaviors vs. Inherited Traits, Harmful and Beneficial Microorganisms, Changes in the Earth’s Surface, Sum of Parts, Physical and Chemical Changes, Electricity and Magnetism

  11. Our Specials Schedule • Specials are done on 3-day rotations. • A- Music • B- Art • C- Tech 1 • D- P.E. • E- Tech 2 • F- Science • G- Math

Attendance Information • Please review the attendance policy in the Student Handbook. • Attendance Protocol (GA Law)- Please send a note of explanation the day the child returns so we can determine if the absence is excused. • School hours are 8:50 am-3:20 pm. • Students who need to be checked out early should do so before 2:35 pm. • If a student is checked out before 12:00 pm, it is counted as an absence.

  13. Other Information • Breakfast-students pick it up on the way to class, and we eat in the classroom. • Lunch-Our time is from 10:56-11:26 am. • Ice Cream-may be purchased each day for $1.00 and $.75 if making a whole class purchase. • Students cannot arrive at school before 8:20 am unless for a special program. (ex. Chorus) • If a student arrives after 8:50 am, a parent must accompany the student in the building and sign in the student. • Picture ID required when checking out a student • If transportation is to change, a written note must be provided. Phone calls are not accepted in this case. This is for safety reasons. • Notify the school with any contact information changes. • Visitors must sign in at the front office and wear a visitor sticker.

  14. Lunch Visitors • Any adult coming to Magill to have lunch with one of our students must show photo ID. As well, the person MUST be authorized by the enrolling parent on the Student Information Sheet. For one-time occurrences, parents/guardians may write a note granting permission for the visitor to have lunch with the student; however, the visitor MUST present photo ID upon checking in with the front office.

  15. Ways to Get Involved! • Join the PTA and attend PTA functions. • 100% PTA Membership is our goal! • Check the school and class website frequently-jcmagill.org. • Discuss your child’s school day. • Read to and with your child. • Provide a quiet time and place for homework. • Review work in Friday folders. • Share any concerns, questions, or information with the teacher to help better meet the needs of the student. • Attend Early Release Conferences to discuss your child’s progress. (Sept. and Feb.) • Volunteers and visits are welcome-schedule a time with the Parent Center Coordinator, Mrs. Douse-Chatters, in the Parent Center.

  16. My Payments Plus Information • If you have used www.mypaymentsplus.com to complete registration and would like to access the orientation documents online, you can do so by logging in and clicking on “manage account” and then “manage documents”. • Uniforms can be ordered through your account. • Any parent with an e-mail address may complete paperwork on this website with your child’s student ID number.
