  1. Welcome to Curriculum and Meet the Teacher Night! Lindsay Hawkins 8A Honors Geometry and Linear Algebra Academic Lab

  3. Changes in Akimel A-al • New approach to teaming • The student’s pod is where the majority of their classes are • 3rd Hour is the student’s homeroom Change is vital to progress!!

  4. Great Academic Support • Learning Lab • Monday–Friday from 7:30 – 8:15AM each morning • Students must arrive at the front gate promptly at 7:30 am where they will be greeted by a teacher and escorted upstairs. • Late students cannot be admitted. • Homework Club During Lunch • Student can ask to attend or be assigned by teacher • Student needs a HW Club Pass • They eat lunch and complete homework

  5. Life in the 8A Pod Area • Bathroom Use • Encouraged to use natural breaks in their day • 8 passes for bathroom/drinks during class each quarter • 10/10 Policy: Students cannot leave the classroom in the first and last 10 minutes of class • Snacks • First 5 minutes of class • Limit to Individual size-sharing is BIG distraction

  6. Ms. Hawkins’Academic Lab • 6th Period for 53 minutes on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday. • Students will earn a letter grade in Ac Lab • 1st Quarter—Math Intervention • 2nd Quarter—Math Applications • 3rd Quarter—Math Applications • 4th Quarter—Math Applications

  7. Ac LabMath Applications Students will learn how to apply their math skills in real-life situations! Students will learn… • How to use Microsoft Excel • How to use a graphing calculator • How to make a budget • About credit cards, interest, mortgages • How to plan a vacation, model a house, etc. • How math is used in sports, video games, careers • Tricks on how to solve problems in their head

  9. About Me… • Grew up in Arizona • Kyrene alumni • BS in Mathematics with an Education Emphasis • Highly Qualified in Secondary Mathematics (7-12) • Second year at Akimel A-al • HATB Coordinator

  10. What to expect in Honors Geometry this year… • Your child will be introduced to Geometry concepts that are aligned to Arizona State Standards • Geometric Properties • Basic Concepts and Proofs • Transformation of Shapes • Coordinate Geometry

  11. Topics include… • Patterns and Sequences • Geometric Probabilities • Similarities • Circles and Circle Theorems • Transformation Matrices • 3D Geometry • Surface Area and Volume • Trigonometry of the Right Triangle

  13. How Do I Get The Final Grade? 9 Week Quarter Grade Semester Grade • 40% is 1stQuarter Grade • 40% is 2nd Quarter Grade • 20% is Final Exam Grade • Assessment (90%) • Tests, Quizzes, Projects • Practice (10%) • Bell work, Classwork, Homework

  14. How Can I Check My Grade? • Grades will be updated regularly and can be viewed in StudentVue and ParentVue. • Check your grades on a regular basis! • All assignments, tests, project due dates, and activities are posted daily on the 8A website—online calender

  15. What Will We Be Doing In Class? • Cooperative Learning Groups/Partners • Tests • Quizzes • Quick Quizzes • Projects

  16. Homework Policy • Daily Basis • 30-40 minutes to complete • Due the Following Day Unless Specified • Posted on Board • Check HW – ~ 5 Points per Assignment • MUST SHOW WORK • Time will be given at end of class to start assignment

  17. Late Work • Homework turned in late will not qualify for full credit. • Any completed late work that is turned in before the Chapter Test will be counted as halfcredit. • Absolutely no late work for any reason will be accepted after the Chapter Test

  18. Quiz Corrections • Not Required; Student’s responsibility to correct problems • Students must fill out Quiz Corrections worksheet • Depending on the student’s work, up to half the points they missed can be earned back. • 2 days to complete • Students will be guaranteed half the points back if they come in before school or during lunch and complete the problems with me.

  19. Student’s responsibility to obtain the information and assignments they missed. Students have 1 school day for each day absent to complete missed work (this applies to homework, notes, classwork, quizzes, and tests) Please let me know if student will be absent ahead of time Absences

  20. Progressive Discipline • 3 refocuses for the entire year • After 3 refocuses, student is automatically sent to Time Out • After 3 Time Outs, student gets one full day of ISI ….

  21. Materials • 1”-1½” 3 Ring Binder • 12 Tab Dividers (one tab for each chapter) • Composition or spiral notebook for HW • Red Pens to grade • Lined Paper for notes • Graph Paper • Pencils and erasers • Highlighter • Scientific Calculator (has “sin,cos,tan” buttons)

  22. Class Wish List • Colored and White Printer Paper • Loose Leaf Lined and Graph Paper • Pencils • Dividers • Dry Erase Markers • Tissues • Clorox Wipes • AAA Batteries for Graphing Calculators

  23. Keys To Success…How Can You Help? • Stay on top of behavior and grades • Take an interest in their homework • Help them study • Encourage your child to come in for extra help (Learning Lab and Homework Club) • Attendance is extremely important! Everyday is something new and important.

What to expect in Linear Algebrathis year… • Your child will be introduced to Algebra concepts that are aligned to Arizona State Common Core Standards • Algebraic Expressions and Equations • Graphing Linear Equations • Mathematical Operations • Mastery of Basic Skills (Percents, Fractions, Decimals) • Probability • Logical Reasoning • Data Analysis • Geometry and Measurement • Transformations

Major Focus • Concentration on Conceptual and Procedural Knowledge as well as Math Communication • Algebraic concepts and reasoning such as working with variables, simplifying and evaluating algebraic expressions and solving algebraic equations. • Solid geometry, geometric relationships, and logical thought Linear Algebra lays the foundation for higher level Mathematics
