  1. LLL : long life learning in Flanders A secondopportunityforpersonswithdisabilitiesorchronicillness

  2. Higher Education in Flanders • Master and Bachelor : • common traject (3 years for bachelor, 1 year master) • Combination of working and studying, a longer course, almost with lessons on the evening or at the weekend • Graduating : • Isn’t equal to a bachelor in Flanders • in a centre for adult education • graduating is between secondary school and higher education, a kind of vocational training

  3. Tresholds : inflow • No possibility for some students to enter higher education (you need to have the right certificate), most students from special education schools have no possibility to enter - Fighting against prejudice – focus on the disability and not on the competences : orientation to higher education is not obvious for persons with disabilities or chronic illness

  4. Tresholds : flow through • (Some) Students are afraid to tell about there disability. There is a great problem then. Students cannot use reasonal adjustments. • Work placement in an educational traject leads to several difficulties, also because of the lack of reasonal adjustments. • The combination of working and studying together is very difficult and hard to do

  5. Tresholds : stream out • Fighting against prejudice – focus on the disability and not on the competences to get a job • Economic crisis : stepover from education to the labour market is very difficult for (all) younger people (temporary contracts, interim, …). In combination with disability you have two tresholds

  6. Adjustments : inflow • Orientation in secondary schools based on competences, not based on disability • Encouragement of persons with disabilities to study in higher education • Make it more easy to go to high school when already working • We need a step between secondary and higher education for (some) persons with disabilities

  7. Adjustments : flow through • Organize a longer traject of learning • Make a difference in the curriculum between the essence and the side-issues • Organize studying as a combination of learning in distance and hours of contact • Students with disabilities need empowerment to handle there disabilities in a positive way, as a reel part of them. Recognize possibilities and difficulties and solve the problems together with them!

  8. Adjustments : stream out • Give the opportunity for persons with disabilities to “practice” longer in a system of workplace learning(the transition from education to the labour market is more easy) • Pay attention to persons with higher education in guidance organizations • Organisations who support people mostly work with lower educated people • Persons with higher education want to do it on their own, but underestimate the difficulties • Install a system of jobcoaching on the work place 1. that lasts longer then six months 2. when there is a need (for the employer or for the employee)
