The Importance of the Five Year Plan • This is the only place where you get to tell: • how you will operationalize your project; • what you are doing; and • when you are doing it.
Year One • Pre-preparation • Developing collaborators • Developing volunteers • Hiring • Training and whom you will train • Recruiting your audience
Year One cont. • Conducting the programs • How long programs will take. • How long a cohort will be involved in the project • How many hours of contact with each participant • How you will use technology • How you will start sustainability strategies • How you will start the community component • When you will evaluate. • How you will evaluate. • How long will you follow the cohort
Year Two • Describe how year two will be different from year one. • Describe the cohort – is it new? • If this is a new cohort, is year two a repeat of year one. • If this is the same cohort as year one, describe the program in year two. • If you will have one new cohort but also continue with year one cohort, describe activities for both and if there is an intersection.
Year Three – Year Five • Continue describing as you did for year one and two. • When you will evaluate long term results.
Core Competencies • In year one of your five year plan, you said you are going hire folks to conduct the program. • You also said in your five year plan that are going to provide training to those conducting the program each year. • What is the plan to get this done?
Developing a Job Description • What skills does your personnel need? • Core Competencies – what applies? • Other skills? • From these develop your job description • Look for good candidates
Interview Process • Who should be involved? • What is the purpose of your interview process? • Develop questions that will differentiate differences in candidates. • Look for soft skills
Training and Coaching • Initial training is important. • Self assessment using Core Competencies and other tools. • Develop a training plan based on needs. • Review the plan regularly. • Provide frequent feed-back
Multi- institution Approach • New option for the 2012 SCP RFA • Do not know if it will be included in new SCP RFA • Includes a 1862 & 1890 collaboration • May be from the same state or different states
Advantages • Adds strength to proposal • Adds potential sites • Combined budget - double that of a single application • Potentially adds diversity to the participants • Potentially adds diversity to the team
Disadvantages • Both institutions must have the same program model – you have to agree. • Both institutions must be significantly involved. Is there infrastructure in both institutions? • Only one application is allowed per institution each year • If two institutions engage in this arrangement, it is the ONLY application that may go forward for each institution. • Different institutions have different rules on how to determine which proposals go forward.
