Literary Terms • Syntax: the arrangement of words in a sentence • Diction: the particular choice of words • Denotation: the literal dictionary meaning of a word • Connotation: the suggested meaning of a word beyond the dictionary definition • Tone: the writer’s attitude towards a subject • Purpose: what the writer wants the reader to understand
