  5. Background Information • Ernest Hemingway Hemingway (1899-1961), American novelist and short-story writer, was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954. He was noted both for the intense masculinity of his writing and for his adventurous and widely publicized life. His succinct and lucid prose style exerted a powerful influence on the American and British fiction in the 20th century.

Fahrenheit is used in the United State and some other English-speaking countries. On the Fahrenheit scale, the freezing point of water is 32℉ and its boiling point 212℉. Celsius is used throughout most of the world. On the Celsius scale, the freezing point of water is 0℃ and its boiling point 100℃.
