Galveston County Health Needs Assessment: Improving Health & Well-being

  1. The REACH Galveston County Health Needs Assessment: Developing an Evidence-Base for Improving Health & Well-being in Galveston County

REACH Mission • Umbrella board developed to serve as the bidirectional mechanism to engage community leaders with multiple UTMB Center and Institute leaders to: • Build research and academic-community partnerships • Inform research development and implementation across the translational spectrum from basic science to public health • Impact community health and wellness through community intervention and dissemination of best practices • Evaluate both process of networking and products

Roles for REACH Advise leadership of UTMB Institute for Translational Science (ITS) and other Centers related to setting priorities, identifying issues of concern, and providing recommendations for governance as needed Serve as advising entity for research teams related to community-based and patient-engaged research Liaise with broader community for communication and dissemination of information

REACH Membership • Multiple Centers and Institutes: • ITS, CET, GNL, Inst. for Human Infections and Immunity, Center for Addiction Research, Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Women’s Health, Center for Hispanic Excellence, proposed Children’s Environmental Health Center • Broad-based, high-impact Galveston community participation: • Social service providers, public and mental health agencies, clinicians, law enforcement, cultural and faith-based organizations, Chambers of Commerce, local schools and colleges, and industry

Assessment Background • Essential to any population-level translational research effort is accurate information about your target population.  • Data for population health indicators at small area geographies is often difficult to obtain, particularly in areas outside of only the largest cities in the U.S.  • - Galveston County is no exception.  • Galveston County Community Health Needs Assessment seeks to fill the data gap by providing both UTMB researchers and our community partners with better population health estimates for the county

Purpose • The Galveston County Health Needs Assessment is being conducted collaboratively by the UTMB ITS Community Engagement and Research Resource in partnership with the Galveston REACH Coalition, to provide evidence-based baseline estimates among the general adult population of Galveston County in terms of: • Health status and Quality of Life; • Disease, health determinant, and health behavior prevalence; • Access to health care, health-related services, and similar resources; • Disaster preparedness; and • Perceptions of neighborhoods and communities in terms of health, health risk,  and health promotion

  7. Assessment Survey • Stratified random sample of adults living in Galveston County • Oversampling in rural & predominately lower-income areas • Aim is to get a sample representing the entire County, not just a particular group • Mail-out survey, with options to take online • Survey completion support centers at public facilities • Remuneration • Details still being discussed
