  1. Electrolysis • What is electrolysis? • The use of an electrical current to drive a chemical reaction. • What happens in the electrolysis of water? • Water decomposes into H2 gas and O2 gas.

  2. Electrolysis Applications • Anodizing • Chemical production • Hydrogen fuel cells

  3. Anodizing • Produce an oxide film on metals and alloys • Metal to be treated is the anode on the electrolytic cell • Can improve the performance of the material • Corrosion resistance • Abrasion resistance • Hardness

  4. Anodized Aluminum In aluminum anodizing creates a porous surface to which you can add pigments. Anodized Aluminum 100x 200x 400x

  5. Chemical Production - Electrorefining • Used for many metals • Copper • Silver • Gold • Aluminum • Copper refining process • Cathode is pure, anode is impure • Cu2+ ions travel through the solution to the cathode where it becomes solid copper • Impurities are left at the bottom of the tank

  6. Chemical Production - Electrosynthesis • Manganese dioxide • Used in alkaline batteries • Mn2+(aq) + 2H2O(l) --> MnO2(s) + 2H+(aq) + H2(g)

  7. Electrolysis of Water

  8. Hydrogen Fuel Cells Combines H2and O2to form water and produce electricity
