  2. Civil Rights Results • During 1960s protests dominated the news and the government must respond • The first victory for African Americans comes in 1954 • Brown v. Board: Historic case that said segregation was illegal and unconstitutional

  3. Civil Rights Results • African Americans form a group to fight on their behalf that still exists today • NAACP: group that fought for equality and an end to legalized discrimination • National Association for the Advancement of Colored People

  5. Civil Rights Results • President Kennedy wanted to stop the protests and grant African Americans equality during his presidency • Kennedy in 1963 works with Congress on a Civil Rights Bill • November 1963 President Kennedy is assassinated leaving Lyndon B. Johnson as President

  6. Civil Rights Results • President Johnson signs the Civil Rights Act of 1964 • Protection of voting to everyone • Open public facilities to all (No more segregation) • Equal job opportunities • No racial discrimination in public

  8. Civil Rights Results • It was seen as a milestone for African Americans, but some southern states resisted this law so another law was passed the following year • Voting Rights Act of 1965: Law that ended literacy tests and poll taxes on African Americans at all voting locations

  10. Civil Rights Results The civil rights victory was short lived however: Shortly after the signing of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, Malcolm X was shot and killed at a rally in New York City

  11. Civil Rights Results • Three years later another tragedy would strike America • In 1968 in Tennessee, Martin Luther King was shot and killed on a balcony by James Earl Ray

  12. Civil Rights Results • The loss of these two men brought an end to the Civil Rights Movement for African Americans • Together they accomplished more than anyone previously had • Their fight would be picked up by other minority groups in the near future
