In this guide by Monica McCollum Williams, elementary students learn how to become adept researchers. Emphasizing the importance of identifying key information, the technique outlines the process of creating effective notes, referred to as "Fact Fragments". Students are encouraged to make individual cards for each research question, jot down only essential words to avoid plagiarism, and synthesize their findings into complete thoughts on the back. This method not only promotes critical thinking but also makes the learning process engaging and enjoyable.

Note-taking Technique Created by Monica McCollum Williams Elementary Library December 2008
A good researcher must dig to find words that help answer the research questions. He or she must toss aside the unnecessary sentences, phrases, and words. The unnecessary words do not help answer the question.
“A note is a “fact fragment”- a piece of information that will become a complete thought in the final project.”
When taking notes remember…. • Make a new card for each question • Write your question number on the top of the card. • Write down only important words. • Do NOT copy sentences! That is PLAGARISM • On the Back of the card write a sentence or sentences that will answer the questions using the important words on the front of the card. • Give Credit
