Structure of Lithuanian Power Sector from January 1, 2002: • Transmission company (Lietuvosenergija AB) • Two distribution companies(Eastern and Western) • Few power generation companies: • Ignalina NPP (2600 MW) • Lithuanian PP (1800 MW) • Four CHP (767 MW total) • Several small HPP • Industrial power plants

  5. LIETUVOS ENERGIJA AB owns: • Transmission grid: • 1606 km transmission lines 330 kV, • 4407 km transmission lines 110 kV, • 12 substations 330 kV, • 210 substations 110 kV; • Kaunas HPP and Kruonis PSP; • The control centre; • The telecommunication network • and information system.

  6. Lietuvos energija AB is responsible for: • Management and development of the transmission grid; • Secure and reliable operation of the power system; • Operationof electricity market.

  7. The actors of the Electricity market in Lithuania: • Eligible customers(since 2002 – 20 GWh per year, since 2003 –9 GWh per year, since 2010 – all customers) • Public suppliers –undertakings having in ownership a distribution system having an obligation to supply electricity to captive consumers in its area ; • Independent suppliers – who are the Supply License holder and who are permitted to sell electricity to Eligible customers at contractual prices; • Producers–having generation facilities and permits for production; • Transmission System Operator – Lietuvos energija AB; • Market Operator –a structural unit of Lietuvos energija AB.

  8. Types of transactions between Produces and Suppliers: • Bilateral contracts, • Trade through the auction, • Centralized trade as a Public Service Obligation.

Strategic objectives of power sector: • to prepare for the decommissioning of the reactors of the Ignalina NPP, the disposal of radioactive waste and the long-term storage of spend nuclear fuel; • to integrate the power system into the power systems of EU; • to further develop regional co-operation and creating a common Baltic electricity market; • to strive for a share of renewables of up 7% in the total electricity production balance by 2010.

Energy related research potential: • Lithuanian Energy Institute (www.lei.lt) with 10 laboratories. • Kaunas University of Technology (www.ktu.lt) with: • Department of Thermal and Nuclear Energy and Centre of Industrial Energy Process Analysis and Integration, • Department of Electric Power Systems and Centre of High Voltage Device Diagnostic Technology.
