  1. Adding a Symbol Layer

  2. Adding a Symbol Layer Symbolizing NHD data will assist a user visually understand what each NHD feature shown in the display is representing. If a user uses the same symbol set in each editing session, it will be easier to understand what features are present in that edit session. There are two (2) methods to symbolize NHD data using ArcGIS, 1) manual symbolization 2) layer files Manual symbolization is simple, but will require a user to repeat the symbolization process for each edit session. Using ‘Layer Files’ will allow a user to create a symbol set for each feature class, then select that symbol set for all future edit sessions. This process will save time.

  3. Initially, a user should manually symbolize the NHD data present in some edit session, or a user may use ‘Layer Files’ create by USGS. Once a user has a feature class properly symbolized, the user should save the symbol set as a ‘Layer File’. Hover curser over the feature class you wish to create the ‘Layer File’, right mouse click and select ‘Save as Layer File’ from drop down menu.

  4. In the ‘Save Layer’ window, navigate to the directory you wish to save the ‘Layer File’. Name the new ‘Layer File’ appropriately. Remember, there will be a separate ‘Layer File’ for each feature class! Select the ‘Save’ button.

  5. After you open a new edit session in ArcMap, you can use a ‘Layer File’ to symbolize your NHD data. Hover curser over the feature class you wish to symbolize, right mouse click, and select ‘Properties’ from the drop down menu.

  6. This will open the ‘Layer Properties’ window. Select the ‘Symbology’ tab.

  7. Select the ‘Import’ button.

  8. In the ‘Import Symbology’ window, select the browse button. Navigate to the folder where you stored the ‘Layer File’ Select the appropriate ‘Layer File’ for the feature class. Select the ‘Add’ button’.

  9. Select the ‘OK’ button. Verify the ‘Value Field’ is set to ‘FType’. Select the ‘OK’ button.

  10. The symbology should now be set to the desired ‘Layer File’ symbology. Select the ‘OK’ button.

  11. Symbology for that feature class should now be displayed.
