  2. Please be seated when the bell rings • We will assemble and turn in papers (envelopes, staple, etc.) together after the bell rings

  3. In your envelope: • Final Essay • Rough Draft • Research • Any other materials you have not yet turned in • Staple each item individually

  4. TAKS Writing Rubric • Focus and Coherence • Stays on topic • Ideas in essay are related • Sense of completeness – end with a meaningful last sentence • Organization • Transitions between sentences and paragraphs • Organized logically • Organization follows thesis

  5. Prompt: Write an essay explaining how a person can feel connected to a special place.

  6. Thesis = Outline and Topic Sentences • Your thesis not only gives you your outline, but three of your body sentences as well. Thesis – A person can feel connected to a special place because of a shared moment with a friend or loved one, an incident that may have occurred there, or because the place itself is symbolic of someone or something. • Par 1: One reason people could be connected to a special place is because of a shared moment with a friend or loved one. • Par 2: Another reason people could be connected to a special place is because of a significant event that happened there. • Par 3: One last reason people could be connected to a special place is because the place is symbolic of someone or something.

TAKS Writing Rubric • Development of Ideas • Thorough and specific ideas (examples, elaboration) • Ideas are thoughtful, insightful • Voice • Engages the reader • Sounds authentic and original • Writer expresses his/her individuality/unique perspective (only you could have written this essay!) • Conventions • Correct spelling, grammar, punctuation • Errors do not distract from communication • Words/phrases enhance ideas (imagery, figurative language, etc)

  8. Writing the TAKS Essay • Sample Prompt: “Write an essay explaining how another person has helped you learn an important lesson.” • How does this sample essay, which scored a 4, meet the rubric criteria?

  9. Evaluate TAKS Essays • Prompt: “Write an essay about a time when you helped another person” • In small groups, read each of the 4 TAKS essays • Rate each one a 1-4 based on the rubric (there is one of each)

  10. Extra Credit – Due Wed, Feb 15 • Choose 15-25 vocabulary words we’ve discussed this year • On a sheet of paper, for each word, write: • Word • Definition • Example • Non-example • 15 words = 3 points on lowest MG • 20 words = 4 points on lowest MG • 25 words = 5 points on lowest MG • I will not accept extra credit until you have turned in all required assignments!
