  1. Reasons Why TMT Bars Are Better Than HYDS TMT barsand HYSD bars are widely used in the construction and building processes. These days the construction industry prefers TMT bars over HYSD bards due to a number of factors. Although the manufacturing process of the two involves thermal and mechanical treatments, the major difference between them lies in their method of production. TMT stands for Thermal and Mechanical treatment which is the quenching and tempering process used to produce these

  2. bars.HYSD bars, on the other hand, are high yielding strength deformed bars. Torsed (twisted) steel bars, (TOR Steel Bars) and Cold Twisted Deformed steel bars (CTD Steel Bars) are also referred to as HYSD bars. While both TMT and HYSD bars are popularly used in construction, TMT bars are gaining popularity. Let’s look at some of the major factors which make TMT a better choice – Physical composition - HYSD and TMT bars differ in their physical composition. These are usually graded as Fe 415 or Fe 500 while TMT bars are graded Fe 415, Fe 500 and Fe 550. The technology used to produce the TMT bars subjects them to a high temperature. Then, after the final rolling they are further quickly cooled leaving the surface strong and hard crystalline but the core soft and ductile making them ideal for construction. HYSD bars, on the other hand, have more yield strength but are more susceptible to surface damage. TMT preferred due to better corrosion resistance - TMT bars are ideal for the highly humid Indian climatic conditions, more so in the hilly and coastal regions of our country. This is because of their high rust resistance and corrosion resistance properties. HYSD bars on the other hand are not preferred in large-scale constructions in hilly and coastal areas due to their low resistance to corrosion. The high porosity of HYSD bars gives them very low rust resistance capabilities. TMT bars offer superior ductility and adaptability - TMT bars are great for modern building projects because they fit into the innovative designs perfectly. The high weldability of these bars makes for shaping them according to the design while keeping the structure just as strong. Again, unlike TMT, HYSD bars have poor bendability and lower elongation point making it rigid and unyielding for the incorporation of innovative designs in newer construction projects.

  3. Better earthquake resistance with TMT - TMT bars are earthquake resistant. This is because their production process involves heating at high temperatures and sudden cooling making them strong and flexible. This also allows the bars to retain their shape under pressure and resist collapses due to earthquakes. HYSD bars typically have low compression strength and are not quite as flexible as the TMT bars. This makes HYSD bars not quite as capable of handling load surges. TMT bars are fire resistant - TMT steel is also fire resistant. This means that in the eventuality of a fire hazard, they retain the structural soundness of the building and prevent it from collapsing. HYSD on the other hand are low on fire resistant properties and are hence less preferred. TMT is cost effective - One of the greatest advantages of TMT bars is the efficiency of its production process which requires about 20 percent less steel than the manufacturing of other kinds of bars. This result in a lowering of the TMT bar price, a benefit passed on to the end user. To manufacture high strength steel HYSD bars, more steel is required making them very expensive as compared to the TMT bars. HYDS bars came as a great replacement for mild steel bars which had low yielding strength. This made large construction projects conceivable. The emergence of TMT bars, however, imparted a newfound structural integrity to larger, modern structures. The fire resistance, strength, flexibility, corrosion resistance, and durability of TMT bars have made them the best choice for construction and building projects. There are reputed construction management companies like BuildSupply that offer a variety of TMT bars. At BuildSupply, one can buy different grades of TMT bars from major brands such as Jindal Steel, Tata Tiscon, and JSW neosteel.
