  1. Preventing Kitchen Accidents Goal 3.01: Explain safety procedures.

  2. Kitchen Safety Basics • Focus on what you are doing. • Dress for safety. Make sure nothing is hanging off of you. • Practice safe use of all tools and equipment.

  3. Close drawers and doors completely. • Store large pots and other heavy items on low shelves. • Control clutter.

  4. Preventing Falls • Wear appropriate clothing. • Keep the floor clear of clutter. • Wipe up spills, splatters, and peelings.

  5. Hold pans over the sink when spraying oil. • Secure slippery rugs. • Use a stepstool.

  6. Handling Sharp Edges • Only use a sharp blade. • Store knives in a separate drawer, knife block, or knife rack. • Always use a cutting board.

  7. Keep fingers away from slicing edges of graters and chopping tools, and rotating beaters. • Do not soak knives in dish water. • Wipe knives with the blades pointing away from you.

  8. Do not pick up broken glass with your bare hand. (sweep up with a broom and dust pan) • Seal broken glass in a paper bag and take to the outside garbage ASAP.

  9. Preventing Fires and Burns • Keep the stove clean. Grease build up can cause a fire. • Keep cookware in good condition. Check for cracks and warping.

  10. Cooktop Safety *Handle pots with dry pot holders. *Turn pot handles to the back or center of the range top.

  11. *Make sure unused heating units are turned off before reaching over them. *When lifting a pan lid, lift the far edge first so that the steam rises away from you.

  12. *Do not place anything near a hot burner. *Only purchase heatproof utensils. *Keep aerosol cans away from heat sources.

  13. Oven Safety *Arrange oven racks as needed before you turn on the oven. *To remove baking pans, stand to one side when you open the oven door- away from the heat rushing out.

  14. *Pull out the rack, using a potholder. *Clean up spills and crumbs after the oven has cooled.

  15. Gas ranges *If you smell gas, check the pilot light.

  16. Fire in a pan: *turn off heat-cover pan-to smother the fire or use salt or baking soda *do not use water- will cause spatter and cause fire to spread *never carry the pan to the sink or outside

  17. Fire • Always have a fire extinguisher and a smoke detector.

  20. Using Electricity Safely In order to prevent electrical shock: • Before using electrical appliances, read the owners manual. • Check cords for damage.

  21. Keep cords away from hot surfaces. • Do not let cords hang off of the counter. • To disconnect a cord, always grasp the plug.

  22. Limit the number of cords in an electrical outlet. • Use only heavy duty extension cords. • Do not force a plug into an outlet.

  23. Turn appliances off when not in use. • Never put fingers or kitchen tools inside of an appliance. • Never use an appliance with wet hands or near water.

  24. First Aid • Choking- *Heimlich maneuver- procedure for dislodging an object from the throat of a choking person *uses a series of upward thrusts on the abdomen

  25. Burns *minor burns- run under cold water for 5 minutes *major burns- go to the hospital- do not try to remove burned clothing

  26. Cuts and Scrapes: *Apply direct pressure to stop the bleeding.

  27. *Wash wounds thoroughly, then apply antiseptic and a bandage. *For deep cuts, seek medical attention.

  28. Electric Shock: *Unplug appliance. *Check for a response or breathing. *Begin CPR if necessary.

  29. *Check for other injuries (bodily injury, burns, cuts) *Treat other injuries. *Call an ambulance.
