  2. Did You Know? • Backing accidents account for 1 out of 3 collisions • In reality even more since many are never reported!

  3. Killing the “Bottom Line” • “Like being nibbled to death by a duck” Florida Judge in election case • It is the small accidents that kill the company’s profits • Most are under deductible • Most are paid out of pocket • Many not reported to insurance to keep frequency down

  4. How Much Does It Really Cost?

  5. True Costs • When it comes to accidents, 2+2 does not equal 4 • These types of accidents hold a company back • They also hold back the drivers • Less benefits • Less pay • Fewer equipment upgrades

  6. Safety is an ATTITUDE! • You must always be thinking safety • Safety is not compliance – e.g. log books, etc. • Safety is a state of mind

  7. Back slowly Don’t blindside Use a guide Adjust mirrors Check clearance Look at ground GET OUT AND LOOK Avoiding Backing Accidents

  8. CHANGES IN THE INDUSTRY HOW WILL THEY EFFECT YOU?

  9. Changes…What changes? • Tougher DOT enforcement • Changes to CDL regulations • Insurance costs going up • Tougher underwriting standards • Rising fuel prices

  10. DOT Enforcement • Doubled number of audits • Tripled average amount of fine • Tougher drug testing standards • Increased funding for enforcement • Increased roadside inspections

  11. CDL Changes • No difference between violations in personal vehicle and commercial vehicle • No masking violations • All states must report violations back to home state

  12. Tougher Underwriting Standards • Driver hiring/retention standards are getting tougher • Fewer tickets/accidents allowed than before • Driver can become uninsurable and unable to find a job

  13. Rising Fuel Costs • Many companies/owner operators going out of business • Going into winter expect prices to go up more

  14. Survival of the Fittest • Drivers make or break a company • Good loss history and driving records = lower premiums • Good drivers = less DOT trouble • Good drivers = company thrives • Bad drivers = company goes out of business
