  3. What is THON? The IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon is a 46 Hour no sitting, no sleeping event that occurs every February!! In 1973, a small group of dedicated Penn State students held our first Dance Marathon. That year, 39 dancer couples participated and raised $2,000. Since then, THON’s presence in the Penn State community has grown exponentially. THON now has 15,000 student volunteers, 700 dancers, and has raised more than $79 million, benefiting The Four Diamonds Fund at Penn State Children’s Hospital.

Four Diamonds Fund • The Four Diamonds Fund is named after a story Christopher wrote. • The Four Diamonds are: • Courage • Wisdom • Honesty • Strength • Founded by Charles and Irma Millard in 1977 after the death of their son Christopher • Based out of the Penn State Hershey Medical Center • Provides outstanding financial and emotional support to families of pediatric cancer patients.

  9. Club Swimming and Thon • Since 2007 the Club Swim Team has actively been involved with THON • Last year we raised $58,770.67. – 5th out of 250 general orgs!! • We participate in the Adopt-a-Family program • Each year we have 4 dancers

  10. The Hamiltons • We are paired with the Hamilton Family! Recently they moved from State College to Colorado, but we still keep in touch and will get to see them at THON! • Bryona, is our THON child and she is in her 8th year of Remission!!! • She has a younger brother Parker, and parents Gloria and Troy Hamilton

  11. Canning Weekends • A great bonding experience and lots of FUN!!! • We travel to different swimmer’s homes and can in their local community • Weekends: • Sept 28-Oct 30 • Oct 19-21 • Nov 9-11

  12. THONvelopes • Main source of fundraising • THONvelope Party • Sent out in November to family and friends asking for donations • Each member must send out a minimum of 15 THONvelopes

  13. THON Events • THON 5K- October 13 • Family Carnival • 100 Days Till THON- November 7th • Road to THON Celebration Dinner • THON Dodgeball • Mr. and Mrs. THON • THON Football Game • THON Skate • Hershey Tour

How to Dance • Each year Club Swimming has dancers represent our organization during THON, last year we had 4 • Any active member of the team is eligible to dance • We decide based on a point system, as well as family input, and other considerations • If you are interested in dancing this in THON 2013 please stay after the meeting

  15. Dancer Selection Committee • Works together to select the dancers for THON Weekend • Must have shown past dedication to THON and the swim team • Chosen by the THON Chairs

  16. Weekend coordinator • This position is open to anyone who possesses leadership qualities and who would be interested in taking charge of “The Pool” – the club swimming section at THON. • You can’t be on a committee or dancing, you will be contact person for swimmers and their families throughout the weekend.
