  2. Stalphylococcus • Blood agar • S. aureus - beta hemolytic • S. epidermidis – gamma hemolytic • Mannitol salt agar • Mannitol – carbohydrate • Salt – 7.5% salt • pH indicator phenol red

  3. Facultative halophiles such as Staphylococcus will grow – salt makes the medium selective • Mannitol and the pH indicator make the medium differential. • Mannitol fermented – acids are released • pH indicator becomes yellow.

  4. Coagulase • Rabbit’s plasma • Fibrinogen – coagulase – fibrin (solid) • S. aureus – Positive • S. epidermidis - negative
