  1. Wrapping Up Wednesday • Skip a couple of lines from Wednesday’s notes. • Then do the following: • Finish the following sentence: “After the Diaspora, the Jewish people experienced . . . • Then list in bulleted form three concrete examples that support how you finished the sentence • After that, review your answer to Friday’s guiding question: “Why do the Jewish people feel they both need and deserve their own state in the Holy Land?” • Be prepared to share your response.

  2. Beginning of Class Start a fresh side in your notebook At the top of the page write: “The Palestinians”

  3. Individual Work • We are looking for answers to the following questions: • Where did the ancestors to the Palestinians originate ? • What claim do they have on their land of origin? • What promises were made to them, by whom, and how do the promises add to their claim to the land? • How did they react to the return of the Jews? (and why do you suppose they had such a reaction?) Write these questions in your notebook

  4. To Find the Answers • First, do some thinking: Who do you supposed was left in Canaan/Palestine after the Romans expelled the Jews? What do you think these people might have been called? • Then read about the founding and the spread of Islam: • text – “The Prophet Muhammed” up to “The Hijirah”, pp. 264-5; “Muhammed’s Successors Spread Islam, pp. 269-271 up to “Control Extends Over Three Continents”; see also the map on p. 261 • Then read some specifics about the “Palestinians” • handout – p. 3 from end of “The Exodus” through p. 7 • Write the answers in your notebook – use details from the readings to answer fully

  5. Story Time • Listen to the story of the creation of “Ojibweland”. • Consider your reactions to the story. • Ask yourself, “Why did Mr. H tell us this story and what relevance might it have to the last part of question 4?”

  6. Group Work • Compare your answers to the guiding questions to the reading you have just done. Also discuss the “story question”. • Then discuss and develop a detailed answer to the following question: Why do you think the Palestinians feel they deserve their own state in the Holy Land?” • After discussion, each person in the group should write the answer in his/her notebook. Be prepared to discuss your answer with the entire class.

Predicting Jewish Settler Behavior Imagine the following: It is 1946 and you are a holocaust survivor You spent the war hiding out from the Nazis in Poland, living in woods, farmhouses and cellars; you were sick and starving most of the time Your entire family and most of your friends died in Nazi death camps You have become a Zionist and plan to emigrate to Palestine which you hope will become the Jewish state of Israel What will your attitude be towards the Arab people who live in Palestine? What will you be prepared to do to insure that the Jewish state of Israel is created?

  8. Predictions • Given your reaction to “Ojibeweland” and your response to the questions about the Jewish holocaust survivor, what can you predict about the state of affairs in Palestine/the Holy Land at the end of the 1940’s? • Discuss with members of your group
