  1. Year 11 Mathematics 2015

  2. What type of Maths courses are there in year 11? • ATAR Courses: Examinable courses, which may be used towards a university entrance score. • General Courses: TAFE, traineeships, apprenticeships and employment pathway.

  3. Organisation of Courses • Each course has 4 units. • Units 1 and 2 are taken in year 11. • Units 3 and 4 are taken in year 12. • The WACE (Western Australian Certificate of Education) examination for ATAR courses is based only on units 3 and 4.

  4. Year 11 General Courses • Mathematics Foundation: • is appropriate for students to meet the numeracy requirements for graduation, ie pass OLNA. • cannot be chosen by students, students will be placed into this course. • is appropriate to prepare students for employment and further training.

  5. Year 11 General Courses • Mathematics Foundationprovides students with the knowledge, skills and understanding to solve problems across a range of contexts, including personal, community and workplace/employment.

  6. Year 11 General Courses • Mathematics Foundation Content: • Whole numbers and money • Length, mass, capacity • Time • Data, graphs and tables • Fractions and decimals • Metric relationships • Perimeter, area and volume • Probability

  7. Year 11 General Courses Mathematics Essentials • is a course for students who wish to study Mathematics to prepare for employment or further training (such as TAFE, apprenticeships or traineeships).

  8. Year 11 General Courses • Mathematics Essentials focuses on enabling students to use mathematics effectively, efficiently and critically to make informed decisions in their daily lives. • It provides students with the mathematical knowledge, skills and understanding to solve problems in real contexts for a range of workplace, personal, further learning and community settings.

  9. Year 11 General Courses • Mathematics Essentials Content: • Basic calculations, percentages and rates • Using formulas for practical purposes • Measurement • Graphs • Representing and comparing data • Percentages • Rates and ratios • Time and motion

  10. Year 11 ATAR Courses • Mathematics Applications: • is a Mathematics course for students who wish to extend their mathematical skills but do not require knowledge of calculus. • is appropriate for students wishing to study courses at university that do not require a strong mathematical background. • is appropriate for students who have a wide range of educational and employment aspirations including TAFE.

  11. Year 11 ATAR Courses • Mathematics Applications focuses on the use of mathematics to solve problems in contexts that involve financial modelling, geometric and trigonometric analysis, graphical and network analysis, and growth and decay in sequences. • It also provides opportunities for students to develop systematic strategies based on the statistical investigation process for answering questions that involve analysing univariate and bivariate data, including time series data.

  12. Year 11 ATAR Courses • Mathematics Applications Content: • Consumer Arithmetic • Algebra and Matrices • Shape and Measurement • Univariate Data Analysis and the statistical investigation process • Linear Equations and their graphs

  13. Year 11 ATAR Courses • Mathematics Methods: • is a challenging Mathematics course for strong students of Mathematics. • is appropriate for students wishing to study courses at university that require mathematical and/or statistical background, such as Health Sciences, Social Sciences, Biological Sciences and Finance courses.

  14. Year 11 ATAR Courses • Mathematics Methods focuses on the use of calculus and statistical analysis. • The study of calculus provides a basis for understanding rates of change in the physical world, and includes the use of functions, their derivatives and integrals, in modelling physical processes. • The study of statistics develops students’ ability to describe and analyse phenomena that involve uncertainty and variation.

  15. Year 11 ATAR Courses • Mathematical Methods Content: • Functions and graphs • Trigonometric functions • Counting and probability • Exponential functions • Arithmetic and geometric sequences and series • Introduction to differential calculus

  16. Year 11 ATAR Courses • Mathematics Specialist: • is the most challenging Mathematics course and is suitable for students who are very strong at Mathematics. • cannot be taken as a stand alone course and must be taken with Mathematics Methods. • is appropriate for students wishing to study courses at university that require a strong mathematical background, such as Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, Physical and Chemical Sciences.

  17. Year 11 ATAR Courses • Mathematics Specialist provides opportunities, beyond those presented in the Mathematics Methods ATAR course, to develop rigorous mathematical arguments and proofs, and to use mathematical models more extensively. • The Mathematics Specialist ATAR course contains topics in functions and calculus that build on and deepen the ideas presented in the Mathematics Methods ATAR course, as well as demonstrate their application in many areas. • This course also extends understanding and knowledge of statistics and introduces the topics of vectors, complex numbers and matrices.

  18. Year 11 ATAR Courses • Mathematics Specialist Content: • Combinatorics • Vectors • Geometry • Trigonometry • Matrices • Real and Complex Numbers

  19. Which course is right for you? • Talk to your teacher; they know your mathematical ability and are able to recommend a course that you will find challenging but are capable of succeeding in.
