What type of English courses are there in Year 11? • ATAR Courses: Examinable courses, which may be used towards a university entrance score. • General Courses: TAFE, traineeships, apprenticeships and employment pathway. • Foundation Courses: TAFE, traineeships, apprenticeships and employment pathway.

  3. Organisation of Courses • Each course has 4 units. • Units 1 and 2 are taken in Year 11. • Units 3 and 4 are taken in Year 12. • The WACE (Western Australian Certificate of Education) examination for ATAR courses is based only on units 3 and 4.

  4. Year 11 Foundation Courses • English Foundation: • is appropriate for students to meet the literacy requirements for graduation. (Covers the skills required for OLNA) • cannot be chosen by students, students will be placed into this course. • is appropriate to prepare students for employment and further training.

  5. Year 11 Foundation Course • English Foundationprovides students with the knowledge, skills and understanding to use literacy in a range of contexts, including personal, community and workplace/ employment. • This course is for students who have not demonstrated the literacy standard in the OLNA. The course prepares students for the OLNA test to obtain literacy for WACE/ graduation.

  6. Year 11 Foundation Course • English Foundation : • aims to develop skills in reading, writing, viewing, speaking and listening in work, learning, community and everyday personal contexts. • involves an improvement in English literacy, including reading ability, verbal or spoken literacy, literacy involved in writing, and visual literacy.

  7. Year 11 Foundation Course • will develop skills in the use of functional language conventions, including spelling, punctuation and grammar. • literacy skills required for comprehending and producing texts; for communicating effectively in a learning or working environment, within a community; and for self-reflection.

  8. Year 11 General Course English General: • is the English course for students to prepare students for employment or further training (TAFE/Training WA, apprenticeships or traineeships). • thus it focuses on consolidating and refining the skills and knowledge needed to become competent, confident and engaged users of English in everyday, community, social, further education, training and workplace contexts..

  9. Year 11 General Course English General: • provides students with the skills to succeed in a wide range of post-secondary pathways by developing language, literacy and literary skills. • students comprehend, analyse, interpret, evaluate and create analytical, imaginative, interpretive and persuasive texts in a range of written, oral, multimodal and digital forms

  10. Year 11 ATAR Courses ATAR English: • develops analytical, creative, critical thinking and communication skills in all language modes. • encourages students to critically engage with texts from their contemporary world, the past, and from Australian and other cultures.

  11. Year 11 ATAR Courses • Through wide reading, viewing and listening, students develop the ability to analyse and evaluate texts and to enjoy creating imaginative, interpretive, persuasive and analytical responses in a range of written, oral, multimodal and digital forms. • is appropriate for students wishing to study courses at university.

  12. Year 11 ATAR Courses • ATAR Literature: • is the most challenging English course and is suitable for students who are very strong at English and wish to go to university. • focuses on developing analytical, creative, and critical thinking skills: students will critically engage with texts from the contemporary world, the past, and from Australian and other cultures.

  13. Year 11 ATAR Courses • ATAR Literature: • through wide reading, viewing and listening, students develop the ability to analyse and evaluate texts and to enjoy creating imaginative, interpretive, persuasive and analytical responses in a range of written, oral, multimodal and digital forms. • for university bound students with a strong interest and high achievement in English and a passion for reading and writing.

  14. English Additional Language • designed for students who speak another language as their first or ‘home’ language. • focuses on development of the competent use of Standard Australian English (SAE) in a range of contexts. • specific eligibility criteria apply. Students need to complete an Eligibility Application Form and forward it to SCSA prior to enrolment. See Mrs Hunt for details. Applies up to seven years since arrival.

  15. English Additional Language • English as an Additional Language ATAR develops academic English skills to prepare students for tertiary study. • EAL/DGeneral course prepares students for a range of post-secondary destinations in further education, training and the workplace.
