  1. Team Player Profile Prepared by Michael Van ImpeSpring, 2014

  2. Team Player Profile • Based on the work of David Kantor, theory of Structural Dynamics. • Sometimes referred to as the “Four-Player Model” (Dialogic Leadership by William Isaacs) • Model for individuals and teams to discover their behavioural preferences when under pressure • Improve team dynamics under pressure • Three layers of interaction: • Action • Language • System • Team activity: • Team members form different constellations as they explore the different layers • Can be done with groups from 4 to 400 people (or more)

  3. Team Dynamics Intentions Foundations Team Dynamics • Main purpose is to improve the quality of the dynamic group interaction throughout the organization and to get the best out of the differences How to shift the dynamics in teams and groups? • Create the context for effective team dynamics • Improve the quality of the team dynamics • Handle difficult situations in team dynamics • Create alignment, engagement and accountability • Provide role-models

  4. Overview of the three layers

  5. Action layer • There are 4 action positions: • Move • Follow • Oppose • Bystand • When people • Move: they initiate ideas and offer direction • Follow: they complete what is said, help others clarify their thoughts and support what is happening • Oppose: they challenge what is being said and question its validity • Bystand: they actively notice what is going on and provide perspective on what is happening

  6. Summary of the Action layer (4 player model) Inquiry Advocacy

  7. Language layer • There are 3 language positions: • Power • Meaning • Affect • When people use the language of • Power: they use the language of the gutfeel: action-oriented “What can I do?” • Meaning: language of the head:logical, analytical “What does it mean?” • Affect: language of the heart: emotional “How do I and others feel about this?”

  8. Operating System layer • There are 3 Operating System positions: • Open • Closed • Random • When people prefer a system that is: • Closed: they prefer order, structure, discipline, completion “The tyranny of hierarchy” • Open: they prefer inclusion, commitment, democracy “The tyranny of the process” • Random: they prefer to explore new paths, creativity, individual freedom “The tyranny of the anarchy”

  9. Features of Stuck Groups • Individuals get locked into a single action • “Opposers” are punished by the group, or they dominate • There are no strong movers, or no one ever Follows a move • The ”Bystander” is disabled • Individuals attach double messages to their  moves • Ritualistic and unproductive patterns of behaviour prevail • The team is unable to reach closure and produce results • Lack of capability or flexibility to engage in all four action behaviours • Individuals gravitate to favourite behaviours (and are ”type-casted” in roles by others)
