  4. TURNING OUTWARD • See and hear one another • See the reality of our community • Ensure our work is relevant • Forge relationships based on trust

  5. ASPIRATIONS • What do the people know in my community that leaders may not? • What hopes, dreams, and desires are being met for people in our community? • What hopes, dreams and desires are going unmet in our community? • What patterns have I developed that block my ability to see, hear and understand the aspirations of my community? • What patterns have we developed that make it harder for us to hear each other in our community?

EXPERT KNOWLEDGE • BUILD A LIBRARY • EXPERTS • Architects • Contractors • Library Building Consultants • PUBLIC – WHAT YOUR COMMUNITY KNOWS • Understand the context of peoples’ lives • Identify key issues of concern in the language people use themselves • Uncover and generate a sense of common purpose • Make one’s work more relevant and more impactful

  7. SKILLS NEEDED TO TURN OUTWARD • Authority • Authenticity • Accountability

  8. AUTHORITY • Hold a deep knowledge of my community • Know people – their lives, their hopes & desires • Actively apply that knowledge in my community

  9. AUTHORITY Can I stand on a table and reflect back to people in the community their shared aspirations and concerns…. and would they believe me?

  10. AUTHENTICITY • Reflect the reality of people’s lives in what we say and do • See and treat people as citizens (member of a large community) rather than only as consumers (patrons, donors or members) • Listen deeply to the community in an ongoing way

  11. AUTHENTICITY Do I reflect the reality of people’s lives, and do they believe I have their best interests at heart, even if we disagree?

  12. ACCOUNTABILITY • Set realistic expectations about potential impact of the work and promises made to people in the community • Pursue actions that are meaningful to people – avoid window dressing • Build on what came before, and create a foundation for what might follow

  13. ACCOUNTABILITY Am I living up to the pledges and promises I have made?

  14. ADVOCATE VS. ACTIVIST (Partner) • An Advocate works for you, often for something they do not personally need or already have. There is an inherent superiority in the relationship. • An Activist or Partner works with you. You have found a common ground that you can work towards together. Your needs and your partners’ needs are met in your mutual success.

  15. LIVE YOUR LIFE TURNED OUTWARD • Be intentional • Live in possibility and hope • Be attentive • Be present • Be morally accountable
