  2. Alignment Definition • The extent to which content, instruction, and assessment work together to guide instruction and, ultimately, facilitate and enhance student learning (Webb, 1997).

  3. What will we align?

  4. Outcome 4: Alignment School leaders and other educators monitor and use data to increase the degree of alignment of each and every student’s enacted curriculum and other relevant educational opportunities to the Iowa Core (intended curriculum).

  6. A note about the Common Core • English/Lang Arts and Math approved by State Bd. Education in July • DE is incorporating into the IC to produce one document for district use - November Bd. Ed. • Science and Social Studies – 2-3 yrs. • FAQ sheet on IC site • http://www.corestandards.org/

  7. District Requirements • Complete an initial PLAN FOR alignment of local content with Core Curriculum essential concepts and skills in Literacy, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and 21st Century Skills (Civic Literacy, Health Literacy, Financial Literacy, Technology Literacy, and Employability Skills) and steps to address any gaps • Due July 1, 2012, for grades 9-12 • Due July 1, 2014, for grades K-8

  8. Outcome 4: Targets and Actions Target: District/school staff develop necessary alignment expertise Action 1: Educators learn about alignment processes to implement the IC. Target: District/school staff prepare to implement alignment processes and tools. Action 2: Educators select the processes and tools that will be used locally (LEA) Action 3: Educators learn to use the processes and tools selected. Target: District/school staff implement alignment processes and tools. Action 4: Educators implement the alignment processes and tools selected. Action 5: Educators use alignment data to help make decisions regarding the alignment of the enacted to the intended curriculum.

  9. Quality Alignment Work • Determine purpose of work (intended to enacted) • Select processes and tools that match purpose of work • Provide training and support • Develop and execute a plan to engage in the work
