2012 STAAR Results and AYP Status Presented by Pebble Hills Administration
Background Information • No Texas accountability rating in 2012, • Texas did not participate in writing a waiver to the federal government for AYP exemption in 2012, • Though no Texas schools were given a rating this year by the state, the federal government did continue with AYP standards for public schools, • In order to meet federal AYP standards, scores for STAAR were based on the “Bridge Study” created by TEA,
Bridge Study • Basically, a formula created by TEA to address AYP for 2012, • Uses TAKS scores from a school’s last TAKS year and compares to the results from STAAR 2012, • Based on this formula, schools either met or did not meet AYP, • Rumor is that this equates to a standard of about 35-40% correct on each of the assessments to achieve passing standard.
Some Observations- Reading • Several students did not finish the test, • Several students struggled with the “stamina” required by the test, • Most students used their strategies, • Some students may have “over-strategized,” • Several students showed a great deal of “frustration with the test, • Students felt that the math test was easier!
Some Observations- Math • Several students did not finish the test, • Several students struggled with the “rigor” of the test questions, • Most students used their strategies, • Several students did not use their Math Charts, • Several students did not correctly use their grid paper, • Students struggled with format of problems!
