  2. Purlins are bars or horizontal beams primarily used for providing structural support to buildings mainly in the roof. Although they are commonly used in metal buildings, they can sometimes replace rafters for constructing wooden frame structures. Usually formed from steel sheet metal, roof purlins support the weight of the roof deck.

  3. There are several types of purlins. Each divided into categories based on the materials they are made of and their shapes. Steel purlins can be divided into three different categories. The Zed or Z purlins look like the letter Z and allow purlins to overlap with others at the joints.

  4. Hot-rolled steel purlins are used for contemporary metal building system. Industrial buildings used I-beam purlins and hot-rolled channel to span the distance between roof trusses which is a dominant kind of primary roof framing.
