11. What is an Intellectual Diary (I.D.)? • An ID is a journal for history based writing assignments. • The purpose of the Intellectual Diary is to help you improve our writing skills. • Approach each assignment as an opportunity to become a better writer. • Writing is a good way to discover and clarify your thoughts. Use writing assignments as a tool of self-discovery.

Learning to Write Naturally… • Rather than trying to choose your words before you write, let words and ideas come to you during the writing assignment. • Keep your pen moving during the whole writing assignment. Each writing assignment is timed (3-5 minutes). You should not stop writing until you are told to stop by ME.

13. Learning to Write Naturally… • Turn off the critic in your head. Don’t let anxiety or perfectionism get in the way of putting ideas on your paper. • Avoid correcting mistakes while your write. If necessary, you can proofread and revise after you have put your thoughts on paper • If your mind goes blank, write “I don’t know what I think.” or “My mind is blank.” An idea will eventually come to you as long as you keep your pen moving and stay focused on the topic of the writing assignment.

15. What is an Intellectual Diary (I.D.)? • You will be writing in your ID three to five times per week! • You will be reflecting on historical events and people. • You will be making historical assertions and defending your position.

Make sure that you do your best on EVERY ID question since any of your questions could be chosen for credit. • There will be times when I allow you to choose which ID to be graded by marking it with a star. • ID assignments will be a major grade at least once per grading quarter. Each major grade will include 4-6 ID assignments.
