  1. When Cloud Networking meets Cloud Computing: Software-Defined Networking (SDN)Customer Application Faan DeSwardt Infrastructure Architecture Manager – IAS faan_deswardt@symantec.com SDN – Customer Application

  2. Agenda Background 1 Journey to the Cloud 2 Challenge of the Cloud 3 Missing Link 4 Free Clouds 5 SDN – Customer Application

  3. Who we are… SDN – Customer Application

  4. Background • Previously known as VeriSign SSL and PKI business – now Symantec Identity and Authentication Services (IAS) • No software, all online – SaaS is what we do! • Acquired by Symantec August 2010 – strategic enabler for SaaS solutions – Symantec O3 (http://www.symantec.com/O3) • Completely data center infrastructure centric – have presence in every major demographic location world wide • Benchmark and #1 in online security: • 97 of the world's 100 largest banks • 81% of the 500 biggest e-commerce sites in North America • Norton Secured Seal viewed over half a billion times per day on websites in 170 countries SDN – Customer Application

  5. Our journey… SDN – Customer Application

  6. Journey to the Cloud • 2008/2009 – Journey Begins • Compute and storage virtualization deployed in all engineering data centers • Infrastructure services (DNS, AV, etc.) virtualized in production data centers • 2010/2011 – Midway • Refreshed primary engineering data center with self service virtual infrastructure – Cloud 1.0 is born! • Converged cloud infrastructure blueprint completed • 2012 – Next Steps • Launch secure SLA based “virtual” engineering data centers on converged infrastructure – Cloud 1.1 released! SDN – Customer Application

  7. The challenges… SDN – Customer Application

  8. Challenge of the Cloud • Growing demand faster than expected • 100TB storage consumed in 2 years – suppose to last 4 years • 40TB memory consumed in 1.5 years – suppose to last 3 years • Static Network Configuration • Topology designed for North/South optimized traffic – East/West not considered • Physical and virtual networks live in separate worlds – Troubleshooting maze of mirrors • Converged Infrastructure • Additional connectivity layers between point A and B – Who owns which hop and where did it drop? • New roles and skills required – Who learns what? SDN – Customer Application

  9. What was missing… SDN – Customer Application

  10. Missing Link Agile and Unified Compute and Storage + Static and Disparate Network = FAIL! • Single Compute and Storage vendor vs. Rainbow of network vendors • Unified Compute and Storage interface vs. Fruit cocktail of network interfaces • Open Compute and Storage API vs. Proprietary network dialects • Centralized Compute and Storage Control Plane vs. Isolated and independent network control planes • Aggregated Compute and Storage resources vs. Islands of network resources • Centralized Compliance and Reporting vs. Fractured and incompatible standards SDN – Customer Application

  11. Unleashing the cloud… SDN – Customer Application

  12. Free Clouds • Open Standards (OpenFlow) – Key enabler of Cloud Networking • SDN with Open Standards ensures Infrastructure Investment Protection • SDN Capability of Network Equipment drive buying decisions • Tools and Solutions leveraging and utilizing SDN is priority in future Cloud Architecture • Big Switch Networks is leading the way with OpenFlow support, Open APIs and open source implementations • SDN + Open Standards + Open Source = Free Network Free Network = Free Cloud SDN – Customer Application
