  2. What’s the purpose of meetings? • What do you think? • Plan a program, project, or event • Have discussions • Recap on an event • “Formal or informal deliberative assembly of individuals called to debate certain issues and problems, and to make decisions.”

  3. Bad Meetings • Take more time than necessary • One participant dominates • Items w/out completion date or action plan • Unrelated topics take over (getting off topic) • Discussions not relevant to those in attendance • Ideas rejected w/out discussion and vetting • Too many or too few people • People come late/leave early without advance notice • Only one way dialogue (depending on type) • Meet for the sake of meeting

  4. So What’s A Good Meeting Like? • Obviously the opposite of a bad meeting • Leader is on the same playing field as followers • Able to get group back to focus • Items on agenda not crammed into one meeting • Provides time for side conversation • More of a group run meeting • Planned out agenda

  5. What Are Some Types of Meeting Problems • Structure • Process • Participants

  6. Meeting Problem 1 - Structure • Date, time, etc. • Length • Room, equipment, etc. • Goals/agenda • Wrong attendees

  7. Meeting Problem 2 - Process • Poor preparation • Poor meeting & facilitation skills • Off task/redundant • No completion date or action plan • Discussions not relevant to attendees

  8. Meeting Problem 3 - Participant • Latecomer/early leaver • Broken record • Talk-a-holic • Doubting Thomas • Head shaker • Dropout • Whisperer • Attacker/loudmouth • Interpreter   • Teacher’s pet

  9. What Not To Do With Problem 3 • Meet dysfunction with disrespect. •  Judge people • Require justification • Ignore the behavior • Stick around

  10. Better Recognize! • Appreciate/Acknowledge • Learn what people prefer • “… of the Week” (certain groups, or maybe any group) • It’s not your meeting, it’s everyone’s meeting! But please facilitate!!
