  1. St David’s Day1st March Theme: Storytelling World Book Day 2012

  2. The legend of St David • Dewi Sant, as he is known in the Welsh language was the patron saint of Wales • He was a Celtic monk who lived in the sixth century – 500AD • During his life, he was the archbishop of Wales • He helped to spread Christianity among the pagan Celtic tribes of western Britain

  3. Stories and legends True or false? • He ate bread and herbs – no meat, fish or dairy • He lived for over 100 years • He only ever drank water

  4. The mystery of St David • Dewi or David died in the sixth century • Nearly five hundred years passed between his death and the first written manuscripts recording his life • So how much is just legend? • It is believed that David was a very gentle person • It is claimed that he ate mostly bread and herbs! • But he was tall and physically strong

  5. More about St David • Dewi is sometimes known, in Welsh, as 'Dewi Ddyfrwr' (David the Water Drinker) • He is said to have drunk nothing else! • Sometimes he would stand up to his neck in a lake of cold water! • It is claimed that Dewi lived for over 100 years! • Perhaps it was the healthy diet and water?!

  6. His last words... • 'Be joyful, and keep your faith and your creed. Do the little things that you have seen me do and heard about. I will walk the path that our fathers have trod before us.’ • 'Do the little things' ('Gwnewch y pethau bychain') is today a very well-known phrase in Welsh, and has proved an inspiration to many • Think how this phrase links to our theme this term of enterprise…

  7. Storytelling • Not only is it St David’s Day, it is also World Book Day • I’m sure you’ve seen many staff dressed up as characters • Don’t forget to vote for your favourite • And don't forget to enter the competition in the library • Enjoy spending your £1 book tokens too!

  8. Finally, calling all film ‘buffs’ • Film club starts tomorrow • Come along if you’re serious about films, directing and reviewing • You will watch and review films that you may never have heard of, as well as some very famous ones! • Let’s hear what other pupils have to say about it • http://www.filmclub.org/
