  1. Follicle-Stimulating Hormone By: Monica Farfan

  2. Where is it produced? Target Cells • It is produced in the pituitary gland • In women, the production of eggs in the ovaries • In men, the production of sperm in the testes.

  3. What causes the hormone to be produced? • To keep eggs and sperm count fertile. • Help with menstrual problems, such as irregular or absent menstrual periods (amenorrhea). This can help determine whether the woman has gone through menopause. • Determine if a child is going through early puberty (also called precocious puberty). Puberty is early when it starts in girls younger than age 9 and in boys younger than age 10. • Determine why sexual features or organs are not developing when they should (delayed puberty). • Help diagnose certain pituitary gland disorders, such as a tumor.

  4. When is it more active? • In women, is highest just before she releases an egg (ovulates). • In men, men normally remains constant.

  5. Structure

  6. Typical Amount… • As a child it is low and later in life it is at its highest before menopause—in women • In men it is constant.

  7. Causes the body to do… • In women, control the menstrual cycle and the production of eggs by the ovaries. • In men, control the production of sperm.

  8. Too Much? Too Little? A woman is not producing eggs (prevents ovulation) or a man is not producing sperm. An area of the brain (the hypothalamus or pituitary gland) is not functioning properly. A tumor is present that interferes with the brain's ability to control FSH production. Stress. Starvation or being very underweight • In women, Loss of ovarian function before age 40 (ovarian failure). • Menopause has occurred. • In men, Klinefelter syndrome. • Testicles are absent or not functioning properly. • Testicles have been damaged by a disease, such as alcohol dependence, or by treatments, such as X-rays or chemotherapy.

  9. Medical Treatment • Hormone replacement agents • Consultations • Surgical Care • Testosterone replacement therapy is administered, either intramuscularly or with patches or gel
