  2. Introduction to the game • Soccer played primarily with the feet. • Most popular sport in the world. • 11 players on the field at a time. • NO HANDS! (unless you’re a goalie)

  3. Soccer Basics • Two 90 minute halves with no timeouts • Foul in the box results in a penalty kick • There is no “I” in team

  4. Positions • Goalkeeper • Defenders (fullbacks) • Midfielders (halfbacks) • Forwards (strikers)

  5. Goalkeeper Simple: Keep the ball out of the net. Only allowed to use hands in 18 yard box. Fast reaction time necessary. Fearless in the air. Direct defense

  9. Kicking a soccer ball • Hit the ball with laces for a hard, straight shot • Plant foot (non-kicking foot) is next to the ball • Always follow through on the kick

  10. Kicking a soccer ball (cont.) • Curve a soccer ball by kicking outside of the ball with the inside of the foot. • Most commonly used for free kicks

  11. Slide Tackling • Must be perfectly timed • Have to show that you are attempting to go for the ball • Very risky

  12. Discipline • Yellow Card: warning card for misconduct or overly physical play and even excessive celebrations • Player stays in game • Considered a “warning” • Red Card: result of extremely dangerous play; player is immediately sent off • Two yellows = red • Player not allowed to return to game • Team plays a man down

  13. Free Kicks • Free kicks occur when there is a foul on a play • Most dangerous when in the area of the goal • Most players use the curve when around the net on free kicks (notice that defending players make a “wall”)

  14. Volleying the ball • Follow the ball with your eyes • Don’t lean back, it’ll send the ball flying upwards • Try to bring body over the ball • On side volleys, try to get body semi-horizantal

  15. Dribbling the ball • Keep the ball as close to you as possible* • *except when moving into open space, push the ball ahead • Don’t dribble for too long • Keep head up, aware of who is open I was open!

  16. Heading the ball • Heading the ball is used mostly in the midfield and on defense to win the ball, but can also often be used for scoring goals. • Side of head, forehead, never top of head • Snap head in direction of ball • Out-jump opponent That’s NOT supposed to happen!

  17. Penalty Shooting • Aim for the corners • Hard and accurate • Keep eye on the ball through entire process, that way the goalie can’t tell which way you are looking

  18. Out of Bounds • Corner kicks occur when ball goes out on the defending team at the touch line • Goal kicks occur when ball goes out on the attacking team at the touch line • A throw-in occurs when the ball goes off of either team on the sidelines
