FDR wants to expand New Deal • Didn’t want to increase deficit spending • Spending more than we were taking in • 1937 • Economy better • Convinced many people that Depression was ending (it wasn’t) • Unemployment increased from 7.7 million (1937) to 10.4 million (1938)
Critics of ND • Conservatives (Republicans) • Oppose ND • Gov’t too powerful • Liberals (Democrats) • ND didn’t do ENOUGH to help
Supporters of ND • President was able to balance between the 2 sides
Lasting Impact of the ND • Expanded role of Gov’t in the Economy • Spent millions of tax dollars • Regulated banks & businesses to prevent another depression • Protected workers rights • Set working hours and wages
Lasting Impact of the ND • Social Security • Citizens need to help the needy • Insurance to older Americans • Environment • Civilian Conservation Corps planted trees, created nature walks. • Tennessee Valley Authority • Used water power and helped prevent floods.
