  1. Success Criteria Pans Labyrinth

  2. Introduction You should include: • Title (El Laberinto del Fauno), director, year it was made (2006). • Mention backdrop (5 years after civil war May-June 1944, during Franco rule) • “Bloody, beautiful fairytale” (Culturepulp) • Outline key aspects you will be discussing.

  3. Categories You should include: • Medium – primary medium cinema – impact for viewer. Link to Gratifications Theory – relationship with Ofelia (story form her point of view) • Form – foreign, subtitled film. Implications for audience. • Tone – dark, sinister, serious – context of war, graphic violence, lack of colour/light. • Purpose – to entertain/ make a profit (del Toro spent his own wage to ensure production was as he wanted – ‘Mimic’.

  4. Hybrid genre FANTASY (further classified as fantasy-realism – mandrake/ chalk door) Conventions • Magic • Mythical creatures • Prop’s character roles (identify who performs which role) - Could link this to audience cultural assumptions about hero/villain etc. NB: Fantasy world is NOT about escapism but offers Ofelia more power/control than ‘real’ world as she completes tasks etc. HORROR Conventions • Young child protagonist embarking on dangerous solo journey – link to audience/ Gratifications Theory. • Monster – frog/ pale man. • Gore/ graphic violence.

  5. Representation You should discuss: • Idea of rebellion in Spain through Ofelia/ parallel to Mercedes. • Ofelia’s rebellion against mother’s desires to conform, represents her opposition to conforming to the fascist life that her mother has. • Eats grape/ fails to spill blood of innocent. Highlighting her virtue and moral integrity as child and hero of the text. • How Ofelia doesn’t adhere to the stereotype of a princess, as she is not the prize, but she inherits the prize of her own kingdom, when she leaves the dark world of Fascism behind. • How Ofelia running lost in the maze trying to flee Vidal represents idea of Spain trying to break free from fascism. Thereafter she is delivered from the darkness of that world into a happy, light, fun-filled party, akin to the atmosphere in Spain when freed from fascist rule. You should discuss: • The representation of Fascism through Vidal parallel to Pale Man. • Vidal as stereotypical villain and Fascist ruler. In what ways does he represent the likes of Franco/ Hitler etc. • how his casting/ characterisation makes his villainy clear from the outset. • Vidal’s treatment of Ofelia reflects Nationalist treatment of Republicans. • How Vidal represents essence/ nature of fascism by trying to destroy the anti-Franco fighters in the surrounding woodlands and the incident with the farmers. • The parallels between the Pale and Vidal (wealth of the nationalists etc.)
