  2. What is a print? • Print • Created by transferring ink to paper (or another surface) • Plate • What the ink is placed on (has a specific design or pattern) • Press • Pushes the plate down on the paper

  3. Tools in Printmaking • Brayer • Rolls ink out • Ink • Depends on the technique • Burnishing • using a smooth flat object to rub the back of the paper which has been laid over the inked plate, in order to transfer the ink to the paper

  4. Characteristics of Printmaking • The print = a mirror image of the plate • Letters & words are backwards

  5. Types of Printmaking: Relief • This is printing from a raised surface. • A simple example of relief printing is a rubber stamp presssed into a stamp pad and pressed onto a piece of paper.

  6. Planography • Printing on a flat surface • Lithography = print from a flat stone • Monoprint • Only 1 impression can be produced • A printed painting • No 2 are alike • Dries fast – work quick!

  7. Intaglio Printing • Prints made from cutting the picture into the surface of the printing plate • Use a sharp tool to cut • Plate = metal or plexiglass • Ink is pushed into the lines of the design. The surface is then wiped clean so that the only areas with ink are the lines. • A sheet of paper which has been soaked in water is then placed on the plate which is run through a printing press. • Dry-point
