Printmaking Processes • Relief Printmaking • Carving into a wood or linoleum surface • Ink raised surfaces to print • Intaglio Printmaking • Etching into a metal surface • Ink inlaid in etched lines to print • Silkscreen Printing • Transferring a design onto a screen to push ink through • Used for t-shirts, posters • Lithography • Drawing a design on a stone surface • Using a resist chemical, ink sticks to drawn lines to print

  3. A Brief History • Pre-Historic Cavemen stamp hands on walls • 1,000 BC-Ancient Sumerians engrave stamps on cylinder seals • 2nd – 8th Century-Chinese and Japanese create ‘rubbings’, Europeans print textiles • 1151- Paper! Invented by someone in Spain

  4. And now that we have paper… • 15th Century-German playing cards made from woodcuts • 16th Century-Albrecht Durer invents the printing press (self portrait in studio to the left) • Etching into metal, woodcuts, and eventually lithographs on stone are created.

  6. Relief Printmaking • Carving an image into a PLATE • Our PLATE will be a LINOLEUM BLOCK • Rolling ink over carved surface • Pressing inked design onto paper • Raised surfaces hold ink, carved surfaces will be the color of the paper • Image on plate will be reverse on paper

Your Project • Will be a linoleum block relief print • 4” x 6” • Can be your choice of SUBJECT • Portrait • Still Life • Landscape • Non Objective • Can be your choice of PURPOSE • Persuasive • Artistic Expression • Functional • May NOT have words in the design • Should show at least 3 levels of value • Hatching/cross-hatching
