Whiskey Rebellion 1.) American Farmers were producing whiskey to sell. Reasons: a) easier to transport b) income was better 2.) Congress passes a tax on the whiskey. 3.) Small farmers complain they cannot afford to pay the tax. They revolt and some call themselves the “new Sons of Liberty.” 4.) Washington gathers 13,000 militia (more or less) to put down the rebellion. Why? A possible reaction to Shays’ Rebellion, as Washington did not wish to have an open rebellion.
Washington’s Farewell Address • Suggests certain dangers the new nation will face in the future. • 1.) Political Parties---geographical discriminations. • 2.) Create institutions for the general diffusion of knowledge. Need for an educated populace for the Republic to survive. • 3.) Avoid the accumulation of debt and not ungenerously throwing upon posterity the burden which we ought to bear. • 4.) Cultivate peace and harmony with all… but steer clear of permanent alliances. • 5.) If the people wish to change the constitution, let it be done by an amendment.
