  2. RACE • R: Re-state the question. • A: Answer the question. • C: Cite evidence. • E: Explain your evidence. • S: Summary (closing) sentence.

  3. R: RE-STATE QUESTION At the beginning of your answer, re-state their question in a response format. Example: (Q) How does Stanley prove to be an abusive husband in the play? (Re-stating) Stanley is an abusive husband in the play because…

  4. A: Answer the question Answer the question after you’ve re-stated it. Example: (Q) How does Stanley prove to be an abusive husband in the play? (Answering) …he yells at Stella and hits her.

  5. C: Citing evidence Give specific examples from the text provided to prove your answer (citations). – ALWAYS GIVE 2!!!!! Example: (Q) How does Stanley prove to be an abusive husband in the play? (Citing evidence)On page 50 Stanley yells at Stella to, “cut out that conversation.”/Also, on page 57 Stanley hits Stella when he is drunk as it says, “there is the sound of a blow.”

  6. E: Explain your evidence Explain your citations…that’s the only way they are useful! Example: (Q) How does Stanley prove to be an abusive husband in the play? (Explaining) This shows Stanley being verbally and emotionally abusive because he won’t allow Stella to speak. / This scene shows Stanley being physically abusive to Stella.

  7. S: Summary sentence Write a short summary sentence that restates your answer and closes the paragraph. Thus, by acts of physical and verbal abuse, Stanley is shown to be an abusive husband.

  8. Full Example #1 Q: How does Stanley prove to be an abusive husband in the play? A: (R) Stanley is an abusive husband in the play because (A)he yells at Stella and hits her. (C) On page 50 Stanley yells at Stella to, “cut out that conversation.” (E) This shows Stanley being verbally and emotionally abusive because he won’t allow Stella to speak.
