This training session focuses on enhancing principals' understanding of the Common Core standards and their implications for school leadership. Participants will explore evidence needed to evaluate the implementation of these standards, engage in activities to brainstorm principal responsibilities, and reflect on effective leadership practices. The agenda includes group discussions, evidence analysis of principal leadership, and strategic uses of resources for successful Common Core implementation. By the end of the session, participants will be prepared to train colleagues in evaluating and supporting Common Core initiatives within their schools.

Aims of The Session • To enhance your understanding of implications of the Common Core standards for principal leadership. • To help you understand the types of evidence needed to evaluate implementation of the Common Core in schools. • To prepare you to train colleagues to evaluate the implementation of the Common Core in schools.

Leadership in The Common Core • Principals Should: • Purchase and provide equal amounts of informational and literacy texts for each classroom • Hold teachers accountable for building student content knowledge through text • Provide PD and co-planning opportunities for teachers to become more intimate with non fiction texts and the way they spiral together • Support and demand the role of all teachers in advancing students’ literacy • Support and demand ELA teachers’ transition to a balance of informational text\ • Give teachers permission to slow down and deeply study texts with students ELA Shift One: Balancing Literary & Informational Text ELA Shift Two: Building Knowledge in the Disciplines 14
Activity 2a: Evidence of Principal Leadership • Your group will focus either on ELA/Literacy or Mathematics • Examine NYSED’s “Leadership in the Common Core” handout • Proposed principal responsibilities for implementing the Common Core • Brainstorm examples of evidence that you could use to evaluate principal leadership in this domain • Draw on yesterday’s discussion of objective evidence • Document on chart paper
