  4. Housekeeping • Syllabus = Bible in E-101 – please read it • Office hours – • Still getting firmed (section shuffling) • Each TF does one day a week • Available by apptmt. – Phone/Skype • Slots differ by TF – can attend any • Pace yourself

  8. Course Requirements • Paper 1 (20%) • 8 pages MAX • Due October 12 • Identify an education policy issue

  9. Course Requirements • Paper 2 (20%) • 10 pages MAX • Due October 26 • Identify a policy problem and examines policy alternatives to address it

  10. Course Requirements • Paper 3 (35%) • 25 pages MAX • Due December 21 • Written as a group (up to 3) or alone • Research-based paper that proposes a policy or program

More on Papers • Rewrites • Papers 1 and 2 can be rewritten if you receive a B- or less. • Your final grade for that paper will be the average of the initial draft and the revised version. • Paper 3 cannot be rewritten. • Drop boxes close at the time listed on the syllabus (5 PM) • Do not put your name on your paper (more on this before the first assignment)

  12. Alternative Final Papers • Two-page proposal outlining the paper is due October 12 • Only do this if you are involved in a real-life project • Must be tied to the information and skills used in this course

My expectations of you - • Email communication • I don’t check work email after 9 p.m. • 24 hrs. turn around time to respond • Before a paper is due, 24 hrs. prior at least • Save the date – paper deadlines • No extensions unless documentable evidence is provided to Fernando • Extension requests to Fernando with a Cc to your section TF • Authentic participation • The 30,000 feet view – where is Person A coming from and what can I learn from this person? • Continuous feedback – ‘facilitator’ • You will be fair to all your TFs

My expectations of you - • Academic integrity • Letter sent to all registered students @ the Extension School • All work submitted to meet course requirements, whether a draft or a final version of a paper, project, take-home exam, computer program, oral presentation, or other work, must be your own words and ideas, or the source must be clearly acknowledged. Copying material from public websites such as Wikipedia or other online sources is plagiarism, unless the source is properly cited and quotation marks are used. In addition, all paraphrased material must be acknowledged completely. The penalties for plagiarism are serious and can include required withdrawal from a course (with no refund) and the suspension of registration privileges for a term, a year, or indefinitely, with appropriate notations on your official transcript.

Section structure • Broad structure similar to today • Each week 1-2 facilitators will lead – 1 hr. • Focus on applying the reading • Policy debate • Case study • Seminar on the readings • What’s in the news? • Focus on applying the reading • Send lesson plan via. Email (Sat./Sun. evening 5 p.m.) • Get feedback – we will meet/Skype/talk on Mon. • I will jump in when needed, so don’t fret
