  23. IGMP v1

  24. IGMP • The Internet Group Management Protocol is used by IP hosts to report their multicast groupmemberships to any immediately-neighboring multicast routers. • IGMP v1—RFC 1112 • IGMP v2—RFC 2236

  25. IGMP V1 Packet Format 4 7 15 31 0 • Version: 1 for IGMP v1. • Type: • 1 = Host Membership Query 2 = Host Membership Report • Checksum:Always computed over the whole IP payload. • Group Address: • Type = 1: Set to zero. • Type = 2: IP host group address of the group being reported.

  26. IGMP v1 Message Type IGMP Router Query Dest: 224.0.0.1 • Query Type • Report Type Host C I am not in a Multicast Group No need to Report Host A Host B Report With Multicast Group Address224.10.10.1 Report With Multicast Group Address224.10.100.1

  27. IGMP v2

  28. IGMP v2 výhody oproti IGMP v1 • IGMP version 2 extends the functionality of IGMP while maintaining backward compatibility with IGMP v1. • IGMP v2 adds new message types, anIGMP v2 Host Membership Report and a Leave Group message. It also adds a variation on the Host Membership Query called the Group-Specific Host Membership Query. • The details of these new message types are discussed in the following sections.

  29. IGMP v2 0 7 15 31 Type: 0x11=Membership Query - General Query, used to learn which groups have members on an attached network. - Group-Specific Query, used to learn if a particular group has any members on an attached network. 0x16=Version 2 Membership Report, 0x17=Leave Group,0x12=V1 Membership Report Maximum Response Time: NOT set to zero only if Membership Query Messages are being sent. Specifies the maximum allowed time before sending a responding report.

  30. Router only needs to know which group has members. Report of B suppresses others’ report. Idle Member State Delaying Member State IGMP process IGMP Router General Query Dest: 224.0.0.1 Report Dest: 239.8.8.8 Host A Host B Host C 239.8.8.8 239.8.8.8 239.8.8.8   

  31. Leave Group IGMP Router Leave Dest: 224.0.0.2 Host A Host B Host C Not a Receiver Not a Receiver 239.8.8.8
